Win update to 24H2 "close-but-no-cigar"

Over the past few days I've attempted updating from 23H2 to 24H2. In all cases I employed the Windows 11 Installation Assistant app. Three went to completion and are stable. On the fourth machine, an HP desktop, the installation went almost to the end but before completing, it stopped and displayed this rather useless message. Has anyone else seen this little ditty?

Don't reduce the image, post it at the original size. Alternatively you can crop and post the message only. An easy way is to open it with Microsoft Paint and crop it, then Save as a new JPEG file.

EDIT: I magnified it with Microsoft Edge, it looks like saying the setup failed. Why you use only the Upgrade Assistant? I would download the ISO and install from there.

Tony, Look at your error logs to see if it points you anywhere. Depending on where in the install the failure occurs, the log can be in multiple places.Logfiles are clear as mud but maybe you can spy the error code that caused the failure.

If no error message occurs on your screen, the following log files are created when an upgrade fails during installation before the computer restarts for the second time. If yours got almost to the end and rolled back, look in C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err
  • C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
  • C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
  • C:\Windows\setupapi.log
  • [Windows 10:] C:\Windows\Logs\MoSetup\BlueBox.log
  • C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log
  • C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
  • C:\Windows\panther\PreGatherPnPList.log
  • C:\Windows\panther\PostApplyPnPList.log

Could you give the specs of that HP that's failing.

Mine failed and rolled back multiple times using the iso (which is the stage where window.s old is being created). I would fix what the log file pointed to as being the culprit only to have my next effort give a different error and point to something else. I spent 2 days trying to chase it down and ended up doing a clean install which I should have done in the first place. I could have saved hours of spinning my wheels.

If a clean installation can take almost a week until you restore all the backup and reinstall and reconfigure everything from start, it is preferable to spend a couple of days trying to repair the old installation. Beyond that, it's not worth it, then I would also give up and do a clean installation.

My apology, friends. I wanted to highlight how small the error message was by posting the whole screen, but the screenshot was 6 MB large and this Board has a limit of 2 MB so I'd decreased the pizel size... thus the inability to read the message. Here it is in full density.

MS Windows 11 Download


Go to The Microsoft Download Site and download an ISO from there then Use It to install with. It is a safe clean site.

My SystemInformation.txt file is 2.4 MB, too large to post, and I haven't had my coffee yet.

Thank you. For as often as I've read about people here using an ISO for installation, I've never done it and am nervous to try.

All you have to do is to Right click on The ISO ( you may have to check properties on it and click on unlock if it is locked) it then will open up and then choose [Setup.exe] and Run it as an admin and follow the instructions. The Tutorial Below should help:

In Windows 10/11 is not necessary, but in earlier Windows versions I would copy all files from the ISO to a folder and run Setup from there. This was because the virtual DVD might not be available after restart and Setup would not find the files to continue. I know that all files are copied to C: before the first restart, but I copied manually to a folder anyway just in case. This practice was since Windows 95/98 that the CD-ROM could not be accessed without proper drivers and Setup was reading files from the CD-ROM for every other driver it installed. All I had to do was point to the folder I had copied the CD-ROM files.

This was because the virtual DVD might not be available after restart and Setup would not find the files to continue. I know that all files are copied to C: before the first restart, but I copied manually to a folder anyway just in case. This practice was since Windows 95/98 that the CD-ROM could not be accessed without proper drivers and Setup was reading files from the CD-ROM for every other driver it installed. I have not had a DVD or CD-Rom for years and this method works very well for me.

Thanks for the helpful instructions. I downloaded the ISO file and placed on a USB drive. Unfortunately, none of the methods for mounting the file went through for me (see images below). I would value your advice.
