Win11 doesn't recognize blu ray drive?

I got a new PC but the house have no place for my old internal blu ray drive (LG BH16NS40) and since I'm not using it regularly getting an external case would not be the most cost efficient option because they are way too pricey for 5 inch drives.

I got a sata to usb adapter with a 12v power supply and the drive opens, closes, also does something when I put in a disk, but there is no optical drive in This PC.

I tried to install the driver from the manufacturer's site but it gives me the error message "ATAPI Device can not be found!!!"

In Settings/Bluetooth & devices under other devices it lists as "VLI product string"

In the Device Manager I got no optical drives category, just "VirtualDisk SCSI Disk Device" in the Drives category

In Disk Manager it lists my PC's ssd as Disk 0 and then another one as "Disk 1" and it asks me to initialise but clicking that says the "device is not ready"

I also tried this in the Registry editor but no change

mine works great, maybe if yours offers any firmware or driver updates this might hekp.

I can't do that because when I click on the driver's .exe it says "ATAPI Device can not be found"

I mentioned in the post that I tried this but didn't help. Others said after doing that the DVD/CD-rom category appeared in the device manager for them, for me nothing changed.

I'm curious as to what drivers you downloaded. I visited the link, and didn't see any drivers.

Which is what I'd expect, as Windows hasn't needed special drivers for most optical drives since the days of Windows 95.

Did you download a firmware update?

I have put my own LG BD burner in an external enclosure with a USB interface. I rarely use it, but it has been reliable. The main reason I did that, rather than just buying an external USB burner, is that the BD drive has an old firmware that allows it to work with UHD BD movie discs. (I rarely do that, but I'd like to keep the capability, just in case.) It was a bit expensive, as you post.

I can't guess why your adapter isn't working. The USB adapter itself couldn't power the drive, but you have an additional power supply that should handle it.

All that I can suggest is if you have any old SATA hard drives lying around, test the adapter with one. Maybe it's defective.

Are you sure your SATA to USB adapter will work with optical drives? You need to check the documentation to see if it does.

BTW, I have an external 3.5-inch SATA hard drive enclosure. It only works with hard drives.

That's a point. I have no idea what the circuitry in a USB adapter does. I would have expected it to work with any SATA device, but that could be wrong.

All that I see there is firmware updates. Useless to your immediate problem.

You've already done the test I suggested. If it worked with an HDD, it may come down a compatibility issue, as mentioned by "MisterEd".

If you gave the make and model of the adapter you bought, we may be able to help you find whether it is intended to support optical drives.

The enclosure in the link posted by "jds63" is the same OWM model I bought. Works fine, but expensive. (The expensive part was why I didn't bother posting a link.)

Not much on the Web about that. The Amazon page claims that it supports optical drives, though.

I'm pretty much out of ideas. Was the HDD you tried the adapter with a 2.5" or 3.5" one? (A 2.5" drive wouldn't need the 12V power supply.)

Agreed on that. Like said compatibility issue most likely.

I see that it claims that it supports optical drives. However, read the first review. It says, "At this price level there's really nothing to dislike, as long as it works. It does not work with optic drive though.".

Mine fit without any issues. I think it's an LG WH16NS40. (I have a couple of 5.25" drives. Didn't check to see which one went into the enclosure.)

Missed that. I wish that the credibility of Amazon reviews was higher, but it may be correct.
