Currently I'm stuck on W10, can't update to W11, but I had some questions, if people are able to inform me...

bcaQiBt.png

Ever since I accidentally realized on Windows 8 that I could add any item from the File Explorer Ribbon onto the Quick Access menu, this is how I've operated FE. So far, the top of W11 FE window looks somewhat simillar:

bj0eory.png

Can anyone confirm if this row of buttons on W11 FE is infact still the Quick Access Menu, and if it has any customizability to it? I would want to at least move Select All from the ... drop down menu, onto the main button row, remove the share button etc.

Some nice customizability for the W11 Touch Keyboard, it seems. However, can anyone confirm or deny if that little gear icon in the top left of it, allows you to use the ''full keyboard layout'', like this on W10?

Or, Alternatively, I saw you can re-color each part of the Touch Keyboard in W11, but is it possible for us to customize which keys do and don't appear on the keyboard itself?

@ksdixon

I just typed on screen keyboard in the taskbar search box....
This is what came up. In the lower right there is an Options key, which brings up the Options page shown.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
Thanks, but on screen keyboard is different from the touch screen keyboard.
On win10 at least, you have to right click the taskbar, show touch keyboard, and then open it from the right-side of the taskbar. Hopefully the settings cog on it allows for the full keyboard layout of the touch screen keyboard, like on win10

In Short -

- the new row of buttons at the top of File Explorer on W11 isn't the same as the Quick Access bar, that seems to be dead. And it's not customizable.

- whilst you can put the touch keyboard into ''traditional'' layout, it's flipping huge and it won't change to undocked in that layout choice.

FFS. Two not good things to start off W11 for me.

- The only way to stop Start Menu's Recommendations area from spying on your every move, is to disable Quick Access and Jump Lists (all tied together). WTH, Jump Lists should be separate, they serve a totally different function.

+ Running my reg file to resize the touch keyboard allowed me to undock the traditional keyboard layout so that floats. Then I found the keyboard size slider bar at the top of theme the touch keyboard settings page. 165 gets it to about half the screen horizontally.. but there's margins all around the keyboard which push it away from screen edges when you try to place it precisely. Probably good enough though.

- Alas, my dll's to kill the new immersive context menu from W10 don't fully work correctly on W11. They do two things. Make the right click menu respect your display settings for text menu items (bold, text size), and also removed the ass light-grey-on-white or light-grey-on-dark-grey hover selection colours with a default blue, making it easier for me to see.

On W11 the newer right click menu doesn't respect anything, and when you show more options to get the W10 right click menu, it opens nowhere near the item you clicked-on, and it only does the text display settings now. The hover selection colour seems to be baked-in fully now.

Currently there are too many Cons vs Pros for me to use W11 as my daily driver for a long time. It would mean giving up a lot of the customization workarounds I've put into W10 to improve usability for myself. What a shame...

hmm... interesting.
I appear to have done something to revert half of File Explorer to W10. I currently have W10 Ribbon and Quick Access Menu's; as well as W11 right-click menu.

Screenshot (5).png

I randomly noticed it just now. I think the only thing I've done recently is the dll to see if the w10 context menu could be reverted. I don't see how that would affect the Ribbon/Quick Acess menu's though?

This is a plus for me, since the new FE button toolbar isn't customizable. But now I have to try to find out why it's changed back or my OCD will be murder if I don't know why.

Hi,

You have to put the blinking cursor in front of 00 on FE line. To do that use the right arrow on you keyboard, then click on the Backspace key on your keyboard and write 01 or whatever!

Thank you. You really meant restart the explorer.exe process,, and not restart pc lol, once I did that it moved to the top.
Granted, it was a blank taskbar, so I then had to sign-out and sign back in again to finally get it looking right.

Only issue here is that when clicking on the Start Button when Taskbar is up-top, it's not centre aligned. That is somewhat annoying from a visual point of view.

Screenshot (6).png

EDIT: And that when taskbar is on top, the Notification Tray bits are shown at the bottom, and are cut off.

Soo.. I hadn't told FE to open each window as a separate process. It was even still ticked in FE Options, and the SeperateProcess reg key had the default 0 on it. Changing it to 1, then back again after restarts didn't get me back to Windows 11 FE ''command bar'', I believe it's called.

Then Reddit tells me it's just a known bug in Windows 11 Build 22000.65, which is what I'm on. So I guess I didn't do anything to affect it when testing my FE dll's (even unregistering them didn't fix the issue). I suppose I'll just have to wait and see if FE is re-updated to W11 command bar with the next Windows Update; or if I get bored enough I'll do an inplace upgrade to normal W11 again and document what makes it revert to W10 Ribbon/QA bar.

Why? It's for quick-glance purposes, seperating pros in green from cons in red?
Because it's both annoying and hard to read for someUntitled.png

Oh my lord... did the remove the netplwiz setting to where I don't have to enter my password to log-in all the time?
The tickbox is gone from that application's window.

Not here! Could be the diff between an upgrade vs clean install.

Is there a regedit I can use to reimplement that setting? I absolutely hate having to re-enter password or pin.
