Windows 11 22H2 Incompatibility

My Lenovo laptop evidently has the issue where the Windows 11 version 22H2 will not install on my laptop due to an incompatibility with the current version of the Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers. Any suggestions on how can I resolve this issue or when updated drivers will be released? I have already tried Lenovo's online Automatic Driver Update without success.

Current SST Audio Controller driver version – 10.23.0.4880

Current SST OED driver – 10.23.0.4880

Laptop – Lenovo ThinkPad T490

Windows 11 Pro version 21H2

mackie,

Thank you so much for that link. Looks like I'm going to have to get after Lenovo.

Did Windows show that 22H2 was download and ready to install or did you download it yourself?

rick99,

Yes, Windows update downloaded 22H2 and said it was ready to install; I didn't do it myself. After clicking on install, it took only a few seconds for an error message to pop up saying the update couldn't be installed.

I was asking because that article mackie linked to says, "Microsoft has blocked the feature update to Windows 11 version 22H2 on affected systems." I would have hoped Microsoft wouldn't have download it. It's waiting on my Lenovo also. Perhaps mine will fail when I'm ready to install it.

If you've got a saved image of the boot drive and want to test things out why not try a clean install of Win11? That way you're avoiding the problematic drivers although not sure if some other default drivers might work for sound in the interim. If things don't work out you can restore your drive back to the way it is now. As long as you trust the recovery of your imaging software.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.

I hope you have better luck than I did. I just got off the phone from Lenovo Premiere Support. Somehow they don't seem to know much about the issue. The tech told me that no company bulletins have come down. He did, however, walk me through downloading some driver files from the Lenovo website and installing them so that I now have the latest and greatest versions that Lenovo has of those pesky Intel drivers. Now I'll have to wait until the update download comes back to me. Honestly, I'm not optimistic. We did keep the case open.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's way above my pay grade LOL I was just on the phone with Lenovo support who didn't seem to know much about the issue and said no company bulletins had come down. Now I have to wait for the 22H2 update to come back to me to try it, but I'm not really optimistic.

I just received a link from the Lenovo Forums to the following article from Microsoft, which has only served to confuse the situation further for me. According to the article, "Only devices with both an Intel 11th Gen Core processors and an Intel SST driver version of 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152 are affected by this issue." The version installed in my machine is far lower than this. I asked for clarification from the Lenovo tech who posted the link that may be the problem isn't with these drivers but is being caused by something else. Just sayin' if you do run into trouble.

hi
if your OEM has not updated the driver you can get it from Intel

Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers to a version 10.30.00.5714 and later or 10.29.00.5714 and later

I should add that after installing the updates the Lenovo tech had guided me to, I checked the version numbers of the "new" drivers and found they were the exact same ones as the ones I already had. I'm still waiting to hear back from the Lenovo tech about something other than these drivers causing the issue and think I may have stumped him. When I did an online chat with Microsoft, I allowed the tech to do a "deep cleaning" of my machine to speed up performance - it's amazing what ccleaner and Glary miss - and after that the 22H2 update disappeared from my Windows Update, so will have to wait for it to come around again, if it does.

May not be a good idea. Intel recommends obtaining drivers from the manufacturer, saying on its website: "Intel offers generic versions of drivers while computer manufacturers:
  • May have pre-installed customized drivers with altered features.
  • May have verified these drivers for use with the devices on that particular system."

Hello rick99,

I'm curious to know if you summoned up the courage to install 22H2 and what your experience was. The upgrade, which had "disappeared" from my Windows Update, has now reappeared and I'm also apprehensive to try to install it again. By the way, what model do you have? Mine's a T490 ThinkPad.

Hi pbcguy. I have the ThinkCentre M70q Tiny. I haven't upgraded yet. I'm going to wait a month or so to give Microsoft some time to patch some of the bugs.

Since posting my original inquiry, I appreciate all the assistance, suggestions and encouragement I've received on this issue. There may be some hope now and I'm being cautiously optimistic. Today, through Windows Update, I received the notification "Coming soon: Windows 11, ver. 22H2, is on its way to your device." Is it possible that Lenovo, Microsoft or somebody has come up with the solution to finally get this puppy installed?

One of the first things I did when the 22H2 upgrade wouldn't install was to do a live chat with Microsoft. I allowed the technician to remotely access my computer and while he wasn't able to get the upgrade to install, he did offer to clean out all the junk files and folders. I allowed him to do that. It's amazing how much apps like ccleaner miss. After he did it, the 22H2 "download and install" went away. A few days later it returned. But I was hesitant to try to install it again and decided to follow the lead of someone else on this forum and wait.

This morning I noticed that the update nag icon was missing from the taskbar, so went to Windows Update to check on it and there I found the "Coming soon" message. I'm curious if anyone else has had this experience. Fingers crossed this will be the solution we've been hoping for.
