Windows 11 23H2
Hello everyone!

As Windows 11 24H2 release looks promising, I'm planning to update my Dell Vostro 3520 laptop from 23H2 to 24H2 so that I can experience the new features. I prefer running the update through Windows Update in a safe way, but I didn't see the Windows 11 24H2 banner when checking for updates through Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. I just see either "You're up to date" or it downloads other updates, but without the 24H2 banner. If I remember correctly, Windows Update should show me the "Coming soon" banner if my laptop wasn't ready for the update.

I have read about the known issues of Windows 11 24H2 here: Windows 11, version 24H2 known issues and notifications

My laptop has a fingerprint sensor, and I use the fingerprint unlock, along with other unlocking options. I don't have Easy Anti-Cheat and Voicemeeter installed. So, is my Dell Vostro 3520 eligible for the update? Again, I prefer updating from WU safely.

I've updated my BIOS to the latest version and did all updates, including the October 2024 patch, but it didn't help.

Being rolled out gradually but can be downloaded and your PC updated via an in place upgrade. No less safe than Windows Update.

Seems to be a few types for the Dell Vostro 3520

Haven't seen anything in the hardware arena where a Win11 23H2 computer can't also run 24H2. The issue with hardware started with going from Win10 to Win11.

There is no reason for the Dell Vostro 3520 laptop not upgrade / update to 24h2.

You can force an upgrade by doing an in place upgrade, that is, under Windows run setup.exe of a mounted Win 11 24h2 iso.
You can download the Win 11 24h2 iso from here.

The Dell Vostro 3520 uses a Gen11 or Gen12 Intel CPU.

It should qualify for 24H2.

I don't know how long the 24H2 rollout is taking.

One thing to check: Device Security. If everything is enabled there (absent Core Isolation; that's not needed), you should be OK.

Thanks to all of you guys for kind responses.

Checked Device Security, and it's all turned on. My Vostro has TPM 2.0 according to the Security processor details. BitLocker is off.

Looks like that I'm going to have to do an in-place upgrade, since that's also safe. I'll attempt to do this upgrade once I feel that my laptop is ready by Thursday, but I'll have to wait until my internet goes to full speed in the morning.

Your System Two should be okay, your System One may meet the minimum of 8th Generation but also will need TPM 2.0.
WinKey + R, type tpm.msc and Enter to check.

I prefer running the update through Windows Update in a safe way, but I didn't see the Windows 11 24H2 banner when checking for updates through Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
No, none of my supported devices have been offered it yet either. It's a phased rollout, and these always start slowly...

Looks like that I'm going to have to do an in-place upgrade, since that's also safe.
There is a way to get Windows Update to do it for you, if you'd prefer. I used it on my supported System One (in My Computers below) to get 24H2 straight away.

Windows Update not offering 24H2 yet? Want Windows Update to get 24H2 straight away? Set the Target Release Version for 24H2 then check for updates.....
How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2) -post #36

If you want it in Update History, then set the target release version and wait for Windows Update to make it's own automatic check (that will happen within 24 hours).

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

My PC doesn't have the Feature updates section. I think this is because it is unsupported and I upgraded from one version to the next using the ISO, not Windows Update.

My PC doesn't have the Feature updates section. I think this is because it is unsupported and I upgraded from one version to the next using the ISO, not Windows Update.
That is correct. Update History only includes updates that have been installed by Windows Update. That includes all cumulative updates, driver updates, etc. It will only include feature updates if installed by Windows Update. Even on a supported device an in-place upgrade using an ISO won't be recorded in Update History. Neither will a CU that you downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog and installed manually.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop.

Thank you all for support!

Today, I've installed Windows 11 24H2 using the ISO file via an in-place upgrade to my laptop. So far, I've experienced no issues, and everything ran smoothly. The installation took 45 minutes. Then, I've installed all available updates, and they only took like 5 minutes to install them.

Your System Two should be okay, your System One may meet the minimum of 8th Generation but also will need TPM 2.0.
WinKey + R, type tpm.msc and Enter to check.
The Intel Core i7-8700 is listed here:

I'll consider updating the Dell Optiplex 7060 (my System One) to 24H2 later, hopefully before the end of the year when I feel it's ready, after checking my TPM version there as you suggested.

I actually found one known issue when running Disk Cleanup through Settings, because even if I've removed everything listed, the "Windows Update Ceanup" files still shows 8.63 GB. I later learned that this issue, along with the sfc /scannow issue, is almost fixed in KB5044384.

Is it better for me to wait until the November patch in the hope that the Disk Cleanup issue is fully fixed?

It's only a reporting issue and in no way affects the running of Windows.

No issues after upgrading to 24H2 except for some disconnects of my cheap wireless USB dongle. I replaced it with a better one, problem fixed. Also some bug in Open Shell in conjunction with Explorer Patcher which will hopefully fix in a new version.
