Solved Windows 11 24H2 optional. Why?

Windows 11 Pro Version:24H2 OS Build: 26100.2894
For the last two or three days when Windows Update is invoked I see Windows 11 Version 24H2 bannered as an optional update. Why is it not a regular feature update:? Should I take a plunge ( I don't know to swim if it turns a tide :-)) or wait till it is displayed as a regular feature update?

    Upgraded from Windows 10 Home to Windows 11 Home on 28 Oct 2023
Showed as optional here also. I decided to go for it last night and all went well. Haven't come across any noticeable issues yet. Be patient if you decide to install, it does take awhile.

PS: Of course do a backup or image first just in case.

If hardware is not supported or there is an incompatible software, MS will force an upgrade within 2 years regardless.
When 24H2 is suggested as an optional update, it most likely indicates, there is a non-critical hardware/software issue.

And yes, I had already taken system backups with MRPE (Macrium Reflect) and BupperPE ( AOMEI Backupper) even before I started this thread.

Yes, Microsoft has stated "This latest version of Windows is being rolled out in phases, and it has now entered a new stage of availability. Version 24H2 is being offered to a wider range of eligible devices running Windows 11, versions 22H2 and 23H2. To check if the update is available for your device, simply select Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. So my device the DELL Inspiron 3280 is eligible for the update.

I have also come to understand yesterday night "You might get the update automatically if the toggle “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” is selected. When this toggle is turned on, you’re basically requesting Windows Update to give you all the new features and updates as you’re ready for them."

About its release now for eligible devices the blog further states "It’s much more stable and faster, and it feels nice to use. But in some cases, Windows 11 24H2 could be a mess."

This statement however is unsubstantiated until we hear from those who have taken the plunge and report any bugs still existing. ( I have read one or two reports from this forum members ( especially from steveg above) that everything appears OK.)

So, I have now decided to take the plunge and go ahead. My only major worry is whether my HP Printer will work after this update. If it does not ....... I will roll back to 23H2 with the backups.

Personally, I would do an In-Place Upgrade, rather than do it through Windows update.
You'll probably have better luck with the printer, that way. :-)


But with backup(s), it doesn't really matter. If one method doesn't work, try the other.

This is how it unfurled:
14:10 hrs: In Windows Update clicked on "Download and install". Popup: Turn on "Get the latest updates as soon as theý're available" - Turned on and the download starts.
16;25hrs: Download and install completed - Manual Restart initiated
" Updates are under way" - On 100% completion , PC restarted
"Working on Updates" - at 30% PC restarted
"Working on Updates -On 100% completion, PC restarted
"Getting things ready, it might take a few minutes ,Do not turn off your PC"
16:40hrs: - and finally the desktop with all the icons in the same position appears. No blasts, No flames.

Switched on the HP printer and printed a test page. Printer works fine. No problem.

As of now everything appears OK.

It has always been so, it was the same for Windows 10 too. For W10 it would only become mandatory when your current build had reached EoL.

Usually a Feature Update is a full reinstall of Windows, replacing all system files with new ones. As such this would entail a download of 3-4GB and, depending on hardware speeds, up to 2-3 hours to install. Would you really want this to be non-optional?

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

It would still have started the download and install even if you had left 'Get the latest updates...' turned off.

That popup occurs whenever you choose to install any optional update. If that was an optional Preview CU then Windows Update suggests that you turn it on so you'll get all future optional CU's automatically. It's only a suggestion, leave it turned off if you wish to choose whether or not to install them.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

My laptop updated to Windows 11 24H2 with no problems. Running "winver" shows "Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.2314)". My only question is why doesn't it show up in Update History? The only Feature Update it shows is 23H2. Note it took about 1h50 for the whole process to complete.

It was different with my desktop. The 1st time after the 24H2 updated it reverted back to 23H2. In the Update History it said something like, "Windows 11, version 24H2. Failed installation. Error 0xc1900101. I went back and updated a couple drivers and the BIOS to the latest and tried again with the 24H2 update. It was taking a long time and it was late so I went to bed. The next morning it was back to 23H2 again. What is strange that the Update History didn't show anything for 24H2. There was not even an error message.

Note for both my laptop and desktop the update to 24H2 only appeared after I did a manual check for Windows updates. After the 2nd failure for 24H2 on my desktop it no longer shows if I do manual check for Windows updates.

Do you know if behind the scenes Microsoft is gathering data for the success and failure of 24H2? At some point will it make some changes in Windows updates to address what is causing the failures and will re-release 24H2 again?

My guess is because it is a new version, not really an update.

So it should be as this is blocked for some PCs and Laptops for some installed applications and hardware/drivers.

There are 2 Blocks on my Laptop. One is for a currently used App. Those blocks you can find in the Registry.

There is no way I want 24H2 as yet, Windows updates is doing its job. As for the "Get the latest updates..." switch, that is always OFF with good reason.

You must have forgotten that the Update History resets, and only shows updates for the current version, not the previous version updates. Same for Windows 10 after a version update.

As I recall that was true for Windows 10. It's not true for Windows 11 though. I got 24H2 through Windows Update on 3rd October, but my update history still back as far as 08/08/2023 and updates it got while running as 22H2.

On one of my three supported devices I forced Windows Update to get 24H2 shortly after release by setting the target release version for 24H2. That did show in Update History.

Now that a 2nd supported device is seeing it offered in Windows Update I tried letting that one update. It didn't list 24H2 in the Feature Updates. This seems to be a recent 'bug'.

You are absolutely right (y) . Today I updated my Beeelink SEi12 to 24H2.

When I hit on the Option " Download & install" the popup below sprang.

Yesterday when I updated my Dell Inspiron 3280 (running Windows 11 Home) I clicked on the "Turn on" button and went ahead with the download and installation.. Today on the Beelink MiniPC, I hit on the "Not Now" button and the download started. It took about three hours and four minutes to the Desktop.The download measured 5.28GB.

For the benefit of others who may wish to wait for a while, that information banner saying 24H2 is ready has an X in the top right corner. If you click that it will disappear, and will now be found listed in ...Advanced options >Optional updates. But that only lasts for as long as you have the Settings app open. If you close Settings then the next time you open it the banner will be back again.
