Windows 11 - Gallery asking for Admin

Hi,

Has anyone ran into an issue when they click on Gallery it pops up with saying "turn on indexing"? Indexing is turned on and the user profile has indexing turned on.

If I try and elevate it with my admin by clicking on "Turn on now", it just loops and will pop up again.

When I login with my admin account , it lets me access the Gallery without issue, so I assume a service needs elevating, but I struggling to find which services Gallery might use.

Barely anything on the internet as its new, though I've found how to get rid of the Gallery Icon.

Don’t know if either of these things will help but you could try rebuilding indexing


Perhaps turn on Enhanced mode and see if it’s helpful.

For W11, you can switch to Enhanced Indexing in Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Searching Windows . You might be able to see "Advanced indexing options" under the related settings here also, it's relatively the same as clicking on "Customise search locations"

Sometimes these obscure things gives Windows a kick. Sometimes they do nothing.

Are you referring to a user account with admin or the built-in administrator account?

With the problem account, perhaps the user profile is corrupt?
You could try temporarily creating another user account to see if that also has problems with Gallery?

Thank you for getting back super quick :)

@antspants I tried the enhanced indexing option and also playing around with the search locations, but no luck unfortunately

I've had a play around and have the following:

*Admin account (this is a user account with admin privileges, not lets say the local admin account) - Gallery works
*Staff account - works as well, this account does have some privileges, but there's no pop up asking for it to be elevated , which it shoul do.
Student Account - It doesn't work on any student account, they get the issue above.

I have a feeling its an issue with some sort of permissions rather than indexing, but its difficult to see what Gallery is doing, even with process monitor.

Just checked with a normal staff account (should be setup exactly the same as student accounts from my knowledge) and it works fine on them.

I would login with an administrator account and temporarily convert the standard user account to administrator. Then I would login from that account and click on the Turn on now button. Once it is complete I would logoff, login with the previous administrator account and convert the other account back to standard. This should work.

Hi,

I tried the above, by elevating a student account and then selecting gallery, it asks to turn on indexing still (even though indexing is on) and if I elevate it, it does nothing. If I then click on gallery again, it just loops back to that page asking to turn on indexing.


It doesn't seem to be an elevation issue , but for some reason the student accounts think indexing is turned off?

Unless a Group Policy changes that back to off. I don't know which one, I am afraid you have to check them carefully one-by-one.
