Insider Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 25370.1 - May 22

I was able to get this build installed on the first try on my new Desktop. I'll try my old desktop later. On my laptop, I'm going to do a clean install of the release build and give it to my wife. My 3 mini PCs have never been on the Insider Builds and never will be.

Updated fine on first attempt. Did the Stack first, then OS. All's fine. Nothing exciting, but no tripping up on the install, very smooth.

For those failing, is there a particular error code involved (the one mention of it in the Hub that I see is 0xc1900101)? I wonder if you'll find that you were seeing the same one.

And how far in does it fail?

Well installed by about 6.20 pm UK time, tested the one new feature of minor interest to me, and now I am bored with this build LOL.

Messing around with an ARM box currently -- the Vtpm (emulated TPM) is a good way of getting this build to run on it -- I'm using W10 as a Host. I'm trying to get the main system roughly the size of a kindle (fatter of course) and connect all the peripherals externally inc screen, HDD's etc. It will be a nice portable system and ARM type CPU's can pack a lot of punch.

I had to do this to get it to work pre this build --- Linux OS with emulated TPM (not needed for W10 but I had to have it attached to the ist level VM as this is acting as a Host for the 2nd level W11,so ist level VM W10 with HYPER-V, 2nd level VM W11 with vtpm.

Now to have a go with native W11 on this box. Using the ISO (ARM) from UUPDUMP.

I've built loads of "Classical" type computers in the past -- this represents a new challenge.

It's got 64GB RAM, internal NVme 1 T, 1X SATA connector(external), external power supply (mains) and 2 USB-C ports and passable graphics chip up to 1920 X 1080 which is good enough for this project. I can always build another one later with a higher spec if I'm satisfied with the outcome of this. What it's missing is LAN or wifi -- but I'll use a wifi->usb connector or lan->usb and a powered usb hub for more usb connections.

Quite fun messing around with this. Those ARM CPU's 's are worth a look at now Windows support is reasonably stable and guaranteed on them. How about a competition guys of showing the SMALLEST footprint your computer has.

At the risk of upsetting all Apple haters, if you want to explore the capabilities of 'small form factor ARM systems', you could start with an iPhone (or iPad), or even the Mac Mini Box for a base desktop, plus the UTM software. I might suggest an ARM based MS Surface Pro as a ready made test system, but I'm not aware of any viable virtualisation software currently available for the Windows on ARM platform. If size matters for a self-build, that's your target

Hyper-V runs quite nicely on ARM. Certainly on ARM64 CPU's.
Viboot works too.

I'll experiment with creating a VM using HYPER-V.

My original POC (Proof of concept) was to run KVM/ QEMU (Linux Host) so no problem with virtualisation there --then run a W10 VM system on it - use Hyper V to create a VM as 2nd level VM of a W11 system and install standard way so W11 did the compliant checks.

(it's always possible to bypass the hardware checks by actually running dism /Apply-Image and then install the boot loader) but the object of the exercise was to run W11 as Bog standard as possible via the setup.exe classical method -- and until this release on native hardware it failed --no TPM !!! so that's why I went "round the houses" with the 2nd level install to see if it worked --which it did -- not hideously fast though - but it works !!.)

I'm messing around now via a direct install as Host.

There is one snag though trying to install an OS on HYPER-V on ARM. You need to disable sec boot otherwise one can't (at least I can't) install any OS under HYPER V. I'm still mystified by this as the VM Virtual BIOS should be able to cope with these things though.

Added : in KVM the Virtual Bios for sec boot is created using Tianocore (source available) and does the job -- if you use a Linux host then the package to install is something like edk2-ovmf depending on your distro. That will allow you to create Windows (and other) VM's using sec boot

Windows 10 ARM64 runs HYPER-V without an issue. Snapdragon processors seem OK, I think QUALCOMM ones though have issues. There's a whole slew of ARM processors out there so it's not so easy to generalize what will work and what doesnt.

Now back to Linux for the VM. I can't do both at the same time - I lose the cursor. But, after all, its Manjaro unstable with Knerl 6.4 rc3 which was not updated to rc4 this Sunday. Just more interesting.

Both VM's are updated. Storage removed windows.old (8-10GB) and then a snapshot. I still have not set up a backup for my physical drive - not a real high prioority for me (yes I know it should be)
