windows 11
hi all
I am not sure what happened. About once a month or more, I move files over from my laptop (mostly photos) to my desktop that has a large HD attached to it. I then mirror this drive. I went to do this and realized that the windows 11 laptop cannot see the windows 10 pc anymore. The windows 10 pc can browse shared folders like usual. I have an easy work-around but was hoping to figure out what is wrong.
I have:
1. made sure the network is private
2. made sure both are on the same network
3. made sure sharing is enabled.
4. updated drivers for wireless and windows.

Now what may have happened is I temporarily blocked internet access on the windows 10 desktop via my verizon router. This was reversed.
Any idea what might be up and what I might do to fix it?
thank you
win 11

Several others have reported this same issue.
To test the sharing function of your installation, I suggest you create a new, local account and give it administrative privileges. Log out of your current account, and into the new account. Test to see if you can access your files from there. If you can it points to a corrupted user account. If this proves to be the case for you, report back and I will tell you how to get all your personal files into the new account. If you cannot access your shared files from the new account, we'll have to go in a different direction.

Try to new account thing. It's an easy way to narrow it down to a windows problem or an account problem. Personally, I keep a test account on my computer for troubleshooting. It's has saved me a lot of time and kept me from chasing my tail over the years. It's a quick way of testing.

Hi,
If you log in to your laptop with a PIN or a fingerprint, log in once with your password instead.
Hope this does it.

Ouch. So we know it's a windows problem and not an account problem. I will say this has been a random issue since Windows 10 days for a lot of people, me included. I have one PC that's files are shared fine but that PC was unable to access the files from other PCs on the network. I worked for days on it without success. My workaround was to access the other PCs by ip address. I made shortcuts to each PC and pinned to my quick access. I could also access these computers by computer name. Then one day, out of the blue, a windows update fixed it. There was no rhyme or reason to it.

You said you had a workaround. What's yours?

work around is to go on the win 10 pc and grab from the win 11 pc instead of browsing to the win 10 pc to paste :) I have had intermittent issues too, last time I think I just had to update windows on both pcs

You may find that the upgrade has restored the default Password Protected Sharing: ON. I had to turn it off again after my upgrade.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I had a similar issue. Turned out being a regkey I must have set to prevent sharing at some point in the past. I fixed it by modifying the key. Perhaps your key got borked somehow. I don't recall what it is now but I think I bookmarked the page that helped me on another PC. I'll try to remember to find it this evening.

Here is the page describing the regkey (Restrict NTLM: Outgoing NTLM traffic to remote servers) ...

I have only one idea left.

Since a windows update broke it for you, hopefully one will come down the pike to fix it. A clean install on the problematic computer would probably fix it but IMO since you have a workaround it might not be worth the trouble.

Coincidentally, this week I ordered a large external drive. I plan to connect it to the new router I bought and map it as a network drive. That way all my files will be in one place and all the devices in my house can access them without messing around with sharing. It will make backup easier as well.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to help. Just know you're not alone in this issue.
