Windows 11 Pro can't update. Stuck on 21H2 (22000.434)

Hi, I'm here for help because they haven't been able to update Windows 11 to the latest version for over a year.

I've tried everything, but I'm full of hope that there's something that might help.

I'm stuck on Windows 11 Pro 21H2 (compilation 22000.434)

The system works fine, but I know that if I don't update it, my applications will stop working at some point.

I can't and don't want to do a clean install because I started playing around with streaming and I have a lot of applications and configurations related to audio and video that I wouldn't want to start from scratch because it took me a lot of hours to perfect it the way I wanted.

I tried a clean boot, removing the antivirus, disabling all USB devices, installing from ISO but also from a pendrive. Every time the installation gets to 100% and I have an error that the update could not be installed.

After restarting the computer, I still get the error:

0x80004005 - 0x1000A. The installation failed in the DOWNLEVEL phase with an error during PREPARE_FIRST_BOOT operation

Sorry for my English, but I'm using a translator.

I'm a person who can handle computers very well, but unfortunately I failed at this.

I have a lot of disks, disk I and disk D are external USB. I disconnect them for the update.

I have the system on disk C, but it's a larger disk divided into two partitions C and H and there's also the EFI system partition there.

The computer itself works fine but I often get an error: Host Process for Windows Services Has Stopped Working

I noticed that nothing bad happens when this error pops up, but it probably suggests that something is wrong with the system files. The error started appearing when there was a problem updating to a new version of Windows, so I think it's related.

Is there anything I can attach? Any logs that might help point someone to a solution?

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunately, I don't want to install a second system (custom install), because I want to keep the programs, licenses and program settings, which are very important. So the custom install option is out. If I had to do everything from scratch, I would simply do a clean new installation of the system in the latest version.

I'll start by changing the language, to make it easier for us, as you suggested. Next, I'll take care of the event log and attach the logs. I'll send a message with the logs soon. Thank you very much.

The event logs may be useful.

More useful now is the V2 log collector.

What had happened that the EFI partition is 1.8 GB?

Hi,

1. I cant download English Language pack, because i've got error 0x80070424, im trying English UK, and USA and this same error. (i think there is something wrong with my Windows Update)

2. EFI is 1.8, because when I was looking for a solution to my problem I found a fix that suggested to increase the size of this partition. I increased it to 1.8gb

For safety reasons I recommend you detach all other drives leaving on only drive 2
Please run Chkdsk x: /f in ALL partitions (replace X with the appropriate drive letter)
On C: it will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes.

What is the way you're trying to upgrade your Win 11? WU or in place upgrade?
I can noticed that you are running Win 11 21h2, so it failed to upgrade to 22h2 and 23h2
Did you ever install an update blocker?

you can't make that jump. you have to install 22h2 via iso, then run updates until it hits 23h2 (23h2 is not 100% necessary, but i would recommend). then once on 23h2 run the iso to upgrade to 24h2. it will never upgrade from 21h2 straight to 24h2

I can't speak to all this.

However, you can go from 22H2 to 23H2 via a small enablement package. Rather than an upgrade.

yes because it is an enablement kb to unlock/add features to 22h2 thus "23h2". 24h2 is a completely different build, not an enablement package

22h2 build 22621.1.220506-1250
you can install that version of 22h2 on unsupported hardware with NO bypasses necessary. it WILL allow local account creation as well. then update from there to 23h2, then upgrade to 24h2

Hey, I managed to do a few steps.

1. I finally changed the system language to English (UK) (Windows Update works)

2. I updated the motherboard bios to the latest version 3001

3. I updated all drivers to the latest versions. I used the Dotnet Framework Repair tool (I also checked All in One Runtimes and everything is up to date)

4. I removed ESET (AV)

5. I launched Defender

6. I downloaded all the logs you suggested again from the beginning. (attached)

7. I tried to install from the ISO image for version 22H1, unfortunately without success (22h2 build 22621)

8. I turned off the internet during the update.

Still an error that Windows 11 update cannot be installed.

Maybe the logs will tell you more.

a) How come the reserved partition was deleted?

b) How come the recovery partition was deleted?

c) What happened with Defender updates?

Then you could try from 22H2 to 24H2 or you can then jump to 23H2, then try 24H2. (My opinion is if you get to 23H2, stay there)
