For the past month or so, Windows 11 (v. 24H2, OS build 26100.6584) has been randomly freezing or crashing on my 5-year-old ASUS FX706IU (TUF Gaming A17). When the laptop freezes, the windows background turns green. When it crashes, I get stop codes such as:
UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION
0xc000021a
CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (0xEF)
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (0x1A)
Event viewer shows: Kernel-Power Event ID: 41 Task Category: (63)
bug check codes include: 26, 122, 154, 239 and 340
After Googling these errors, I realised that there might be memory problems, so I ran MemTest86. This turned up about 250 memory errors, so I took out the two 8 GB memory modules that came with the laptop and replaced them with one Crucial CT32G4SFD832A - 32GB - DDR4 - SODIMM3200MHz.
The freezes and crashes kept occurring. Further Googling persuaded me that there might be a problem with the power adapter, so I replaced it -- to no avail: the freezes and crashes continued.
I enabled Driver Verifier and one time I got this stop code:
DRIVER_VERIFIER-DETECTED VIOLATION (0xC4)
I've tested all my hard drives (1 internal SSD, 3 external SSD and one external HDD for backups) but there are no disk errors.
I've run SFC /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth multiple times, but no errors showed up.
I thought there might be a problem with the graphics drivers, so I used DDU to cleanly uninstall the drivers for the onboard AMD Radeon Graphics and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. I then installed the latest versions of those drivers. This did not solve the problems.
I've disabled all non-Microsoft services except Macrovision InstallDriver Table Manager and Realtek Bluetooth Device Manager Service, the latter of which I need to use my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Windows 11 is only stable (no freezes or crashes) in Safe Mode with Networking.
I've just run V2 Log Collector and attached the zip file.
For some reason that I don't understand, Windows 11 has not created any minidumps on crashing, even though virtual memory on my C drive was correctly set to Small Memory Dump (256 KB) and is now set to Kernel Memory Dump, and virtual memory is set to System Managed Size.
The weird thing is that when I set Kernel Memory Dump, I get this message:
"Windows might not be able to record details that could help identify system errors because your current paging file is disabled or less than 800 megabytes. Click OK to return to the Virtual Memory settings window, enable the paging file and set the size to a value over 800 megabytes, or click Cancel to change your memory dump selection."
Virtual memory is enabled and 2048 MB is currently allocated, so this message makes no sense to me.
Maybe some Windows 11 guru can help me to overcome these problems. I would be hugely grateful.
I'm on the point of giving up and buying a new PC or laptop. I guess that 5 years is the average lifespan for laptops.
