Hello,

I've been trying to add a third monitor to my setup but have run into some issues. I've updated all relevant drivers using Snappy Driver Installer, as well as directly from the ASUSTeK OEM website, Intel’s website, Realtek’s site, and the dock manufacturer’s page (j5create). According to j5create, the dock is plug-and-play.

Interestingly, I’ve been able to use this dock to mirror my phone to a monitor and TV without any problems. However, when I plug it into my ASUS A3402WBA's USB-C port, it doesn’t output any signal to the external monitor.

I’ve checked Device Manager and attempted to update drivers for all USB controllers and devices through Windows, but it states that the best drivers are already installed. Notably, the USB-C video adapter is using a generic Microsoft driver dated from 2006.

At this point, I’m unsure whether the issue is due to compatibility, user error, or something I’m overlooking. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated—I'm running out of ideas.

Thank you!

The USB-C port may not have Alt Modes support for HDMI or DisplayPort video, or such things as PD.

The manual does not mention any Alt Mode video support, so I would suspect there is none.

That is the problem with USB-C ports, not everything is supported, you need detailed specs from the manufacturer.

Unfortunately you have messed up drivers, that maybe why you have an incorrect? entry for USB-C Video Adapter.

My Laptop does have Alt Mode DisplayPort video support on 2 out of 3 USB-C ports.
PD on 1 of the 3 USB-C ports. Nothing in Device Manager says "USB-C Video Adapter".

The specs of your hub says:
  • Available USB-C® port that supports DisplayPort™ Alt Mode and USB™ Power Delivery 2.0 or 3.0
Please refer to the manufacturer of your hardware for more information on your device

It might be that the third monitor is not activated automatically and you need to enable it from Display Settings, or even better from nVidia/Intel/AMD Control Panel. For example, for my nVidia GTX 1050 Ti card, I go to nVidia Control Panel, Display, Setup Multiple Displays. Of course I assume you have already connected a third monitor on the adapter and the monitor is switched on. It won't activate without a monitor. Also some older graphics cards support only two monitors at the same time, not three. If that is the case, you may have to disable one of the other monitors before you can activate the one connected to the Type-C adapter. For example, with my older nVidia GT 610 card, I could either activate my main monitor (VGA) and HDMI or my main monitor (VGA) and DVI or HDMI and DVI. Not all three. With my current nVidia GTX 1050 Ti I can have three monitors active, but then I would have to move the mouse a lot, so I only have two at a time.

PS: I am not sure if the two monitor limitation was because of the screen resolution making the available bandwidth insufficient. I haven't tried to use lower resolutions to see if I could have three monitors with my old card. If you want one monitor just to watch video while working, a good compromise is to use PiP (Picture in Picture). This means you watch the video on a smaller window which floats over your working application. To do that in MPC-HC or VLC players, simply activate always on top.
