Windows Live Mail problem

Windows 11
I'm hopeless with technology and new to this forum (or any forum!), but I'm really desperate. After 11 years of using WLM for emails, my outgoing messsages are now getting stuck in my outbox. I run my business from this laptop and rely on mails being sent - I've never before had this problem with WLM.

Strangely enough, my email domain provider, IONOS, has just introduced a new encryption security system (TLS1.2). I've updated my incoming and outgoing IMAP/SMTP ports to the ones they specify, but still my mails can't be sent. I've checked on their website and it says that Windows 11 supports the TLS1.2 version. Can anyone help an old person who is pretty useless at computer-speak?

Thanking you in advance.

Firstly, be aware that Windows Live Mail is an outdated, no-longer-supported Microsoft product that is even more flawed and beset with problems than it was when it was first released, so much so that many experienced users find it beyond help, and therefore are reluctant to. The difficulty is that some users have become so entrenched that it is difficult for them to change

But, maybe it's time to learn. Plenty of freeware options
  • Thunderbird (from Mozilla who bring you Firefox)
  • eMClient (free for up to 2 accounts)

Thank you for your response. It much appreciated. However, my laptop is only 3 weeks old and the MS Office was newly installed by the tech guys at the shop, so I don't understand how WLM is no longer supported by MS?

WLM is a left-over legacy of days gone by. Age of the device has no relevance to the age of the software. WLM is not part of MS Office, it is/was a separate email client that came with an earlier version of Windows (a much, much older version), has had a couple of name change makeovers and has been just tagged on to subsequent versions because MS were too lazy to do anything about it (or just couldn't be bothered, thus forcing users onto their other abomination that comes with MS Office).

Unfortunately, you can judge by the response - or lack thereof - how much other contributors care about this program .... it's just not worth the effort

Are you sure it's WLM you are talking about? Win 11 has a built-in email client, Mail. Unless you specifically asked the supplier to install WLM then that may be the program you are having a problem with.

If you have MS Office, see if you also have Outlook. It's a great mail program as far as I am concerned. I have multiple accounts, one being my work email, connected to it.

Dear Fixer - I thought they were the same thing. When I write mails it says sent from Mail for Windows underneath, so I guess it IS mail?

Hey JVickers

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately my MS Office doesn't have Outlook (which I'm now considering installing at considerable expense!). In fairness to Mail, I am running 4 separate email accounts off it! I've used it for 11 years without problem which makes me suspect my email provider's switch to a new encryption system is the culprit......? I'm pretty useless at these things though!

Hi, Ruth. Prior to doing anything else, if you've not already done so, you might contact your email provider to see what information you need to put into Mail. It could be as simple as that. It's also information we on the forum don't know about.

Yes, it's Mail, not WLM. There is a problem with the SMTP settings - check them again.

I've tried doing that (and in fact managed to update the IMAP/SMTP with their recommended settings, but still I can't send out emails. The provider has told me that the fault lies with Mail!

Thanks for this info. Interesting,, since I followed their instructions and used the correct Port number. I have a call-back scheduled with them in half an hour - I'll check the SMTP details again with them.

Ruth, in lieu of Outlook, you might try a free mail program such as Phoenix mail. I believe some on the forum have used that and found it to be a good mail client. I'm sure there are other free mail clients out there; Phoenix Mail is the first to pop into my head.

Thanks JVickers - unfortunately my email domain provider does't recognise that or any of the other suggested email 'clients' (I think you call them!). Thunderbird yes - which I tried and can't get away with. My work email remote sytem is Outlook (I work from home) so I guess it makes sense to get that since at least I know how to use that one! Thank you so much for trying to find a solution for me!

Ruth, Mail is a very simple client that works reliably if it suits your needs. I really advise you to persevere with fixing it rather than diverting your attention to other clients. This is a settings problem, not a Mail problem so other clients will almost certainly fail too using the same settings.

I just checked online; you must have the Home & Student version which I see doesn't have Outlook. It's possible that a version of Outlook that old wouldn't support TLS 1.2 anyway. Oh well...
