Solved Windows not assigning disk letters for removable disks

Hi everyone,

I don't know what's going on, but whenever I plug in a removable USB disk Windows does not assign a letter. I have to go into disk management and manually assign one. This is getting annoying.

Can anyone help?

Do you have 'Autoplay' turned off? To switch it on go to Settings>Bluetooth & Devices>Autoplay.

It's worth a try.

Assuming this condition has already survived a reboot, I'd try SFC first.
SFC - ElevenForumTutorials
If that didn't work I'd try a Repair install [which is, despite its common name, a repair procedure not an installation].

Well, in the end neither suggestion worked. The sfc scan seemed to work for a few hours, but then it went back to the same behaviour. The repair install also did not work.

External disks don't show up in explorer. Strangely, USB flash disks do.

I guess I might have to do a reset of Win 11. Unless someone has any other suggestions?

And what does SFC report now?

This is starting to sound like a problem with a third-party utility altering system behaviour.
Does the fault happen in Safe mode?

Check whether automount is disabled. If disabled enable it.

If you reset Windows you will lose all your apps and data, so I would format and clean install instead.
