Solved Windows not assigning disk letters for removable disks

Hi everyone,

I don't know what's going on, but whenever I plug in a removable USB disk Windows does not assign a letter. I have to go into disk management and manually assign one. This is getting annoying.

Can anyone help?

Do you have 'Autoplay' turned off? To switch it on go to Settings>Bluetooth & Devices>Autoplay.

It's worth a try.

Well, in the end neither suggestion worked. The sfc scan seemed to work for a few hours, but then it went back to the same behaviour. The repair install also did not work.

External disks don't show up in explorer. Strangely, USB flash disks do.

I guess I might have to do a reset of Win 11. Unless someone has any other suggestions?

And what does SFC report now?

This is starting to sound like a problem with a third-party utility altering system behaviour.
Does the fault happen in Safe mode?

If you reset Windows you will lose all your apps and data, so I would format and clean install instead.
