Windows on Arm runs more apps and games with new Prism update

Today, Windows on Arm devices, such as those powered by the Snapdragon X series processors, are getting a boost thanks to an update to Prism that increases performance and enables running more apps and games under emulation.

The Prism emulator is a core part of the Windows on Arm platform, ensuring that Windows apps are able to run seamlessly on Windows on Arm even if they were built for traditional x86 processors and have not been updated to run natively on Arm. Prism works by transparently converting an app's x86 instructions to Arm64 code as the app runs.

With today's update, Prism expands its capability by supporting translation of more x86 instruction set architecture extensions, including AVX and AVX2, as well as related extensions BMI, FMA, F16C, and others. These extensions are not guaranteed to be supported by a processor when running Windows, but they are common enough for some apps to depend on their availability. They are especially relied on by creative tools and games that benefit from the efficient parallel processing that these CPU instructions provide.

Features marked above in green are some of the emulated CPU features newly supported in Prism, as viewed withcoreinfo64.

With support for these additional processor features, Prism can now run a number of apps and games that were previously unable to work on Windows on Arm. One example is Ableton Live, which will be coming to Windows on Arm as a native app next year. Attempting to install Ableton Live 12 as an emulated app prior to this update would fail with a system requirements error because it requires AVX support. After the Prism update, the app installs and runs without issue.

This Prism update has now rolled out to all Windows on Arm devices running Windows 11, version 24H2 or later. All 64-bit x86 apps will have the updated CPU feature support enabled by default. Any 32-bit apps will have it off by default but can be opted in using compatibility settings.

I like to use them together as RoundedTB and TranslucentTB work well together to give you a translucent rounded taskbar lol.

I thought rounded tb had a "glass" option. I use translucent TB to make my TB completely clear.

No transparency on RoundedTB I'm afraid. It has a setting you can check for TranslucentTB compatibility however. I don't go completely transparent thus the RoundedTB also. I set TranslucentTB to Blur or acrylic effect on my machines. I can make it clear or add some tint to it but I like the bar visible.

I've been using my new Microsoft Surface Laptop System Two for a week now and I like it a lot. My Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation runs ARM natively! Everything I use runs fast and smoothly. I love it that the ARM system runs just as fast on battery as it does on the charger! Carrying both computers in my backpack works quite well and it's really nice have both readily available no matter where I am.

I've updated to Windows Pro directly from Microsoft through the Microsoft Store. I took advantage of the included special price for four years of Microsoft Complete. I like the extended security, and the coverage is directly through Microsoft.

I'm a Microsoft 365 subscriber and have all of Microsoft Office installed. My Terabyte of OneDrive gives me yet another local copy of all my data and all my photos. Having all of OneDrive always updated in real-time on a second computer adds yet another layer of security to my backup strategy. And being able to move transparently from System One to System Two with all data and photos always up to date in real-time is remarkably convenient.

The 13.8" size was definitely the right choice. I'm very impressed with the sharpness, readability, and accuracy of the screen. It compares amazingly well to the OLED screen on System One. I really wasn't expecting it to be that good.

I am making the transition in the new year to Arm. We have decided to get surface laptops and 12 inch pros for my wife and I. I think it would be a great choice for us.

I am hoping they come out with some nice SFF arm desktops too.

I'm setting up a small ARM box as a dedicated computer for Stock trading -- That should keep it running fine while I can use "conventional" machines for messing around with Windows etc. All I need on the ARM machine is some type of browser, a stock trading platform, and Office 2024 (with outlook). Since thiswill have a tiny amount of extra software installed other than bog standard ARM version of Windows it should be just fine and need very few (if any) continual updates.

However @TraderGary -- any suggestion for Video -- I find 2 dedicated screens sufficient for trading -- I don't really need 4 or 6 and I usually have real; time "Level 1 data" running - even though I usually day trade. The ARM GPU's should be fine -- doesn't seem to be a problem with phones, TV's, firesticks etc outputting decent video - but any info would be welcome.

Happy Hols and hope "The Santa Rally" continues as often happens at this time of year whatever the economic prognosis is !!!.

I've day traded the same watchlist and chart configuration from a single Trader Workstation screen for a couple of decades. I'm purely a technical trader. I trade using buy-stops, The market has to be moving my way before a trade fills and when it does my percentage stop-loss and sell-stop are automatically entered the instant the trade fills.

For many years I've used two laptop computers simultaneously. I love being able to transparently move between two machines. For me it's the only way I feel comfortable.

For some trades I just leave (but only for 24 hrs) the option to "Wait till executed" and let it expire at Market close or whatever.

Currently a big mover (Made a load on it) is a big UK defence manufacturer and contractor -- Babcock -- also pays dividends which is OK and pays in US $ or Euro €) -- even better -- every time Putin opens his mouth those shares get another boost !!!!

Just a quick update on the TranslucentTB issue, I discovered if you turn off the User Choice Protection Driver then TranslucentTB will be allowed to work again without issues.

I guess the driver was updated on recent Windows builds as it suddenly started effecting two of my machines. Was playing with some Wintoys settings today and saw that switch. Got curious when I saw it's purpose and sure enough as soon as I turned it off TranslucentTB loaded right away again without crashing.

Microsoft has quietly introduced the UserChoice Protection Driver (UCPD) service that is enabled and running by default to block third-party apps access to UserChoice registry keys to prevent changing default apps choices set by users.

@FrancoDT, you were right that I would like my new System Two. I'm getting phenomenal battery life. I use it beside System One every day and always end the day with over 60% battery left. I'm also surprised with the speed. I like to think it's partly because of the fast 8448 MT/s memory.

It's my next system as well, but with 64gb of ram. I am ordering a refurbished model for my wife and I. She will get the sandstone 16gb model and I am getting the platinum 64gb. I was going to go for black, but its a fingerprint magnet and from what I see scratches around the ports.

Also, anyone have experience with the handwriting on the surface pro? On my ipad when I write in a "fillable" section of a document, it changes to typed text afterwards.. Does this work on the surface as well?
