Hi,

When run as admin displays ver. 5.0, install the new ver. 7.3?

I assumed MS/W11 would update it automatically.

Care to explain how and where to update it from?

Thanks.

7.3 is pre-release software at this point, but if you want to install 7.2 you can follow the directions on this page: Installing PowerShell on Windows - PowerShell (You can also change the box in the upper left to 7.3 if you really want.)

They have been doing PowerShell 5 since Windows 10 and allowing advanced users to upgrade to newer versions if they want without making everyone do it since a lot of people will never touch PowerShell.

Thanks for the expert reply. I'm a noob not an advanced user, but it won't function unless it's updated. Best option is to use command prompt?...….Correct?

Usually .zip files can be Extracted within File Explorer [right-click it], just have to specify a folder which may be suggested. Then the .exe file should be listed and double-click it.

Thanks for the expert solution. I deleted the zip, would downland it again and do as suggested...isn't there a command prompt command to update?

Haven't checked, usually no need to use Command Prompt for installing Windows-based programs or updates to Windows-based programs.

If you're asking using Command Prompt instead of PowerShell... open Windows Terminal and press Ctrl+, or click the little down arrow to the right of your tab(s) and select "Settings".

On the next screen, click Startup if you're not already there and change the default Profile to "Command Prompt" and save the changes. Close Terminal and reopen it.

Won't upgrade after unzipping and running the exe?

Any ideas?

Does it give a choice to replace? I use a couple of programs that don't actually update but tend to remove the old version first then install. Maybe uninstall 5 first?

Thanks.
You don't upgrade your version 5 to 7. They are both standalone versions that can run side by side.

Version 5 is referred to as Windows powershell and it's built into WIndows and runs on .Net.

Version 7.x is referred to just as powershell (previously powershell core). It's cross platform (Windows, Linux, OSX).

Version 7 is a separate download that you install.

No it doesn't. When run as admin gives complex commands, not my cup of tea probably would stay with 5.

Thanks again.

Thanks for sharing the expert info, I'll just leave it alone and focus on covid vs. trying to update to 7.

All the best!
