Windows update Install error - 0x80070103

I have been getting this error since the last windows update. I have multiple drivers, all of which have been updated. Help!

@cmkausch you seem to have the same problem a lot of us have ! Our thread is in the Updates Section !

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

• Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
• Go to System > Troubleshoot
• Click on Other Troubleshooters > Windows Update and click Run button.

Download Windows updates manually.

• Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
• Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
• Select the correct version and click Download
• Click on the link and Windows will update your computer

Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

80070103 while installing updates usually means you might be trying to install a driver that is already installed or installing a driver version older than the version already installed. This post over on MS forum has a lot of folks reporting same issue TODAY so would seem to point to yesterdays cumulative causing problems.

Exactly, keep in mind we don't need or want the drivers as they are outdated. Some of us are getting multiple versions of old graphics drivers pushed at us. We just want the updates to stop being attempted. Its effecting builds 22623.1255 and 22621.1265. We've done the troubleshooting steps to no avail.

Gave it a try but nope, they're still there after rebooting

@glasskuter tried your suggestion & no luck ! They are still there !

@flashh4 Would you be my guinea pig here.

1. As well as the registry change in Brink's article also make this change. Export your key first so it can be imported back in if it doesn't work.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching\SearchOrderConfig change value to 0

2. Open System Properties by typing “sysdm.cpl” (without quotes) in the Search box on the Taskbar, then hit the Enter key.
In System Properties, select the Hardware tab, then click on Device Installation Settings.
In the Device installation settings screen, choose NO.
Click on Save Changes to exit.

Restart the system.

3. Then reset windows update per @FreeBooter suggestion. Run the bat file as administrator.

4. Check for updates to see if drivers show back up. Let me know.

I tried the Troubleshooter, but it only "detects" an issue, but provides no remedy to fix it (i.e. nothing to click on).
I re-ran the updates, even rebooted my machine first, but same thing.

@glasskuter how about a test pilot ? I hate the word pig, i'm no where near that guy in description ! Ok here we go with your instructions, be back shortly !

@glasskuter as you can see i do not have "SearchOrderConfig change value to 0"

Just try this again, making sure you reboot afterwards.

Run as Admin- command line- cmd.exe- 1 line at a time.

net stop wuauserv [Enter]
net stop cryptSvc [Enter]
net stop bits [Enter]
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old [Enter]
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 Catroot2.old [Enter]
net start wuauserv and press [Enter]
net start cryptSvc and press [Enter]
net start bits and press [Enter]
netsh winsock reset [Enter]

Restart your system

@OAT tried that about 10 times yesterday and it's a NO from me !

Something got broke on the new updates that MS came out with. Mine are old drivers that have been replaced with new ones, now they want me to update with old ones ..... not happening here ! So we wait for MS to fix their mistake !
