OS
Windows 11
I keep missing Windows updates until I go to shut down my PC which is often late at night when I get given update options.
Is there a way to highlight that an update is available during the day when the PC is running,?
I seem to recall they show a tiny orange dot in the task bar which is hardly noticeable.

The orange dot means that a system update is pending and requires a restart to install.

Cumulative Updates are generally automatically downloaded by the OS. Most of the time, in my experience, to find out if anything else is available requires a manual check in Windows Update. Cumulative Previews would fit into the latter category in my opinion, at least that’s my experience.
For Cumulative Updates, Windows should automatically notify you that an update is pending a restart. I am not sure why they aren’t.
Check your notification settings for anything amiss.

Something “similar” to the following should be popping up. But I am not using 24H2.

Thanks for your reply, I realised an update is pending but the dot is hardly noticeable and wanted some way to make the notification more prominent.

Nothing pops up, which is what I want, maybe I am missing something in the notification settings?

It is more than an orange dot, there are arrows and Restart pending. Wafting over with mouse I think gives you a text panel, I forget and it was only yesterday.
It is a matter of opinion of course, seems good to me.

"Is there a way to highlight that an update is available during the day when the PC is running,?"
There are Restart options and other options to adjust your Active hours relevant to that.

Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options...
In that area the 2nd, 4th, 5th options are the ones to adjust to suit restart notifications.

Settings > System > Notifications > possibly 2 in that list that might be relevant in Apps and senders.

Run through this, Richard
