Solved WinSetView not working properly

WinSetView won't work properly for me. I'm running Windows 11 Version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.963).

I'm trying to do two things -- have search results in File Explorer default to "Details" with an added "Length" column (current results are always "Content" with no "Length" column). I'm also trying to permanently add the "Length" column to video-related directories, and always have "Details" for the folder contents.

I tried applying these settings just now. A test video directory resulted in large icons instead of details, with the "Length" column on the far left instead of second from the right as instructed. Also, after reboot, none of these changes seem to stick. Any directory I customize to "Videos" always switches back to "General Items."

The only thing I can think of is maybe some program I have installed is conflicting with WinSetView. I have StartAllBack installed and operating, but even if I temporarily disable it, WinSetView still doesn't work properly.

Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Interestingly, my settings are the same for folder type Videos. I have Details view with the Length column set for Videos (and all the child folder types of Videos, such as Videos Search Results). This all works perfectly on Windows 10. It also works fine on Windows 11 on FIXED drives (such as drive C:) with the caveat that Windows 11 likes to set folders, that only contain more folders, to type General items. Therefore, if you do a search from an upper level folder of your video collection that is set to type General items, you will get General Items Search Results settings, not Videos Search Results settings. You can fix that by right-clicking the upper-most folder of your video collection and select Properties, Customize, select folder type Videos and check Also apply this template to all subfolders and then OK. Then the folder type should be Videos through that whole tree and you should get the expected results in a search. I say "should" because Windows 11 doesn't always obey your command to set the folder types and may keep those upper level folders as type General items no matter what you do.

REMOVABLE drives are an even bigger problem in Windows 11. On removable drives, the folder type for ALL folders is stuck at General items. So, assuming a removable drive is involved here (or you've got fixed drive folders stuck at General items), you will need to set your General items view similarly to your Videos folder type view, including the length property (until the day, if ever, Microsoft fixes the issue).

If that doesn't explain what you're seeing, send me a copy of your Win10.ini file (from the WinSetView AppData folder) and details of your folder structure and I'll check it out.

P.S. Here's a video I made to explain and demonstrate these bugs.

Thanks for the very detailed response. I'm using a removable drive, so that definitely explains some of my problems.

As a test, I added the "Length" column to absolutely everything, expecting it to show up in one of the root directories of my C: drive, and it doesn't appear anywhere. I've attached my Win10.ini file from AppData as instructed. As for details of folder structure, as far as I can tell, everything's set to "General items" by default.

I used your INI file on a Windows 11 test machine and got Details view, with a Length column, absolutely everywhere. You did actually click Submit, right? If you only clicked Save Settings, that would update the INI file but make no change to Windows itself.

Yeah, I certainly did click submit. It opens that window (Powershell?) & quickly scrolls through a lot of red text, Explorer restarts, and every open Explorer window is closed.

Red text means there was an error. Run it again but hold Alt when you click Submit. That will leave the console on screen so we can see the error(s). Copy and paste that text here or take a screenshot(s) and paste here.

Here you go -- glad I mentioned the color! Side note -- I noticed in the past while using the command prompt that I'd have to type "path=c:\windows\system32" in order to achieve functionality that used to be present by default. I'm not sure how long this has been going on -- possibly when I upgraded to Windows 11 from Windows 10.

I just tried typing "reg" from a fresh command prompt, and got the following:

'reg' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

After entering "path=c:\windows\system32" I now get:

ERROR: Invalid syntax.
Type "REG /?" for usage.

Looks like all I need to do is get "path=c:\windows\system32" to be universally recognized by default somehow...

Clearly your search path is corrupted. You'll need to correct the %path% system environment variable. I don't see a tutorial for that here, so I'll post screen shots in a bit...

In your search bar, type env and you should see Edit the system environment variables. Click that.

Alternatively, press ⊞-R and then type sysdm.cpl, click OK, and then click the Advanced tab.

1671755166470.png

Then click the Environment Variables... button. You'll have to scroll up and down a bit to check all the System variables. I took two screen shots on a pretty vanilla Windows 11 build and stitched them together. Be sure to check all the variables to be sure it's not just the Path that's corrupted.

Double-click each item to see and edit all the details. Here's a screen shot of the Path variable on my test Windows 11 machine:

Looks like it works now! I think what happened is I installed Android SDK platform tools, and that somehow bumped the %systemroot%\system32 to a lower priority. It was still there, just further down the trough, I guess, so I moved it to the end of the list, and everything seems to work now. I didn't even have to reboot.

Search results are finally detailed. I can't tell you how sick I was of always having to change every search I made to "Details" from "Content."

One last question -- is there any way to position the "Length" column so it's directly to the right of "Name" or am I stuck with it being on the very end?

You can reorder the columns any way you like. With the version of WinSetView that you currently have, you must go to the Columns page, uncheck each property (except Name which is locked) and then check them again in the desired order. However, if you download the current version of WinSetView, it provides a drag and drop dialog for reordering the column headings. I recommend that you download the latest version. Click the Help button in the app anytime to download the latest. Going forward, it will subtly notify you if there's a new version (the Help button will change to Update).

I'll do that. Thank you so much for all your help!

Hey thanks for the info that there was a newer winsetview. It helped my issues as well.
