It *is* the default option. I see the Mount context menu option when right clicking. That's also why I mentioned the registry entry that I had double checked. The option *is* there for iso-s.

No, no 3rd party-security thingy. Relying on Windows Defender only (exactly to avoid any interferences with OS operations). I placed a copy of the .iso in the C:-drive's root folder and tried to mount that, but same result - or rather non-result. :-(
