Got it resolved. I suspect that gremlins were involved. Even after the icons came back the recycle bin wasn't there. had to go to themes...

Yes. That may be turned off. (y)

Right click Desktop -> Personalize -> Themes -> Desktop Icon Settings Select the Desktop Icons that you want.

All my desktop has is the wallpaper and the task bar... no icons like trash bin or apps. Where did they go and how do I get them back...
