Oh dear issue resolved. Number 1 rule. Check all connections. The cable from the sub-woofer under the desk had come loose and I hadn't even noticed it.... apologies to all.

Ok so I upgraded last week from Win10 Pro to Win 11. Sound is muffled, using the onboard sound which previously worked fine and was crystal clear. Updated Bios yesterday on my gigabyte Z690 UD DDR4 mobo but still got the same issue. Creative Labs T40 speakers. Answers on a postcard.... done all...
