22H2 breaks Previous Versions by System Restore, how to re-enable it?

Until the 22H2 update you could restore previous versions of files and folders from a system restore point by selecting Previous versions in the context menu or the Previous versions tab of the files Properties page.

I noticed recently this had stopped working and on checking it really does seem this was removed by MS in the Win 11 22H2 update.

To be sure it wasn't just my system I tried it on a clean win 11 21H2 on a VM and it was working fine again right up until I installed the 22H2 update.

It still works for File History but I really miss using it with a shadow copy or restore point.

Has anyone worked out how to re-enable this?

Hopefully there is a registry fix or something.

You will need to setup "File History" to recover previous versions of files. I know that box also mentions "Restore Points" but be aware System Restore (the system responsible for "Restore Points) does NOT copy or restore personal files and folders as stated in the link @Winuser posted.

If you want "Previous Versions" of files you need File History enabled - Enable or Disable File History in Windows 11 Tutorial

@chip222

It's best to start using 3rd party backup software. It works ALL the time. :-)

Yes, I do have Shadow Explorer, it is good, I just like the neat integration of Previous Versions with just a right click to access the old file history. :)

I'm not clear on what you mean by "Shadow Explorer" but I'm strictly referring to File History as linked to the tutorial.

Good luck.

Yeah, I don't use third party apps for settings Windows natively has so I can't speak on "Shadow Explorer".

Hi, yes, I have Macrium, a very good bit of software. I'm just trying to work out how to re-enable this feature as a quick way to open an old version of my file history.
I never used File History so I don't know how it works. You can mount a Macrium image and look at your files if that would be of any help.

there is also shadowcopyview, a small portable which doesn't require net bloatwork. It can display the contents of the shadowcopy volumes and you can copy out anything you want.

it also runs in bog standard pe which is very useful.

Thanks. Given that scenario I can understand why one would come to such a conclusion; and one I find hard to dispute.

That said, I don't use File History anyway considering there are a multitude of ways to recover previous data via backups and cloud storage. So yeah, I can see Microsoft eventually depreciating File History.

Thanks, but I already know how to backup. And as I said in the post above yours....

And I use Acronis for my backups and recoveries. And thanks for the link to the Windows 10 post. Good now (y)

Thanks.

W11 Home v. 22H2 bld. 22621.1413
I started FH on my new W11 system and then discovered it wasn't copying the same folders it did under W10. Then I learned there was no longer any way to designate what to copy. I guess MS is already decontenting FH. I turned off FH and am now running Macrium Reflect to backup the file section of the C drive. It's not automatic like FH, but it works. Plus I can get multiple versions on the internal 1TB HDD drive. Also using MR to create full system images on other 1 TB USB drives after WU runs.
