24H2 Upgrade Issue

Hello all,

I have one of the WD Blue 2TB drives that were mentioned before as having issues with upgrading to 24H2. I've done the firmware update and verified it, yet when I start the upgrade process I still get the error box saying that I have an issue with my WD NVME drive.

Understand that because of all the reported issues with 24H2 I wanted to start with a upgrade instead of a clean install (which I do have a full backup up as well as data backups).

I'm a little hesitant to upgrade now since I figured that Windows would be able to tell that I've done the firmware update. Has anyone else seen this issue?

To post a screenshot on this forum...

1. Take the screenshot, (or camera pic), edit it as desired, save to your desktop as .png or .jpg (max. size = 2MB)
2. Left click in your post, where you want to place the screenshot.
3. Click the Attach Files button at lower left, browse to your image and select it.
4. Then click Insert, I usually choose the Thumbnail (smaller) option, or there is a Full Image (larger) option.

Might be time to call Western Digital and discuss it with them?

I know this says: Sandisk... but this is the right place to call for WD SSD tech support.

Did you attempt to upgrade before updating the firmware of the drive?
I saw where you said still get the error so made me think that you tried to upgrade then had that error then updated firmware.
If so the drive was flagged during setup and you would need to get rid of the setup files that were placed on your drive when you started windows setup and possibility anything placed in the registry as well that was placing a hold on the drive.
Might be easier to just restore your backup before you tried to upgrade then try the upgrade again.

@GusGhanem - Yes, it is GPT (per Disk Management)

@KevTech - I did try a clean install prior to upgrading the firmware and had to reformat the drive since it went RAW. I have reformatted the drive since then.

Have you checked the drive for errors using Check Disk (chkdsk)?

MS have flagged this drive as causing problems with 24H2. Although you have applied the necessary firmware update, I suspect the setup process has no means of checking that and is just blocking the update based on the MS hold. Not sure how you get past that though....

@Marcus Vinicus - Ran chkdsk and it's fine, no errors or anything that needed fixes.

@RFS - I was hoping that wasn't the case, but it's possible. Was asking here if there are any workarounds as I would rather not (at this time) do a clean install.

This an off the wall suggestion but have you thought about opening your PC case and unplugging and replugging in the drive to the motherboard. There could be a connection issue with dust etc., unlikely but may be worth a try.

I would've thought the MS hold will prevent a clean install as well.

Take a look at this article:

A misconfigured Host Memory Buffer seems to be the cause.

To summarize, there is a registry workaround to the issue. Yes, I realize that you have already updated the firmware, but maybe you still need this registry entry to work around the issue on a temporary basis until Microsoft releases the hold.

I would advise the usual precautions of a backup, but it sounds like you already have that covered

Looks like I was right. Here is another article:

Updating the firmware does come at the risk of total data corruption.

"It is pertinent to mention that the registry fix is still applicable. However, that appears to be a stopgap solution rather than a permanent fix."

Are you in-place upgrading or a clean install?

Did you try doing it with the internet disabled?

@Marcus Vinicus - removed and reinstalled NVME drive, no change....

@antspants - In place upgrade. When doing a clean install (which for now, I don't want to do), I need to install WiFi drivers in order to get online. The error that I get happens early enough in the install process that it doesn't matter if I'm online or offline, I still get the error.

Well I “thought” that when Microsoft temporarily stops offering the 24H2 update for devices with known detrimental issues (or whatever) the 24H2 install would only know this by connecting online.
I would doubt these exclusions would be written into the ISO.

So I thought, because I don’t know better, that disconnecting from the net would prevent 24H2 knowing your WD is an issue.

If it were me, i’d disconnect the internet and In-Place with a Rufus v4.6 USB

That screenshot you first posted, is derived from an online check, I am betting.

I am obviously speculating.

Just to add, when doing an In-Place without network connectivity, I would do it with the router off. Not just in Windows settings.

However. I have read on some sites (and maybe in here) that the result could be unwanted blue-screens. But if you’ve updated your firmware, I don’t see why you’d get them.
