Windows XP,11 Linux Fedora Rawhide pre-release 45
Hi folks
With 4 physical CPU's in a machine - should I get W11 Pro for workstations -- I can get several licenses from my current work gig. I don't want different versions of Windows (different builds of the same Windows edition are fine for testing) - so will W11 Pro for workstations run OK on "lesser " and more bog stndard hardware like mini-pc's.

Cheers

Hello Jimbo, :alien:

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations supports up to 4 CPU sockets, so you would indeed want that edition since:

Home max is 1
Pro max is 2
Education max is 2
Enterprise max is 2

It'll also be fine to use with lesser CPUs.

Dear friends, actually Windows "Pro for Workstations" and "Enterprise" editions (I guess also "IoT Enterprise), support up to 4 CPU Sockets.

Look at the nice table in Wikipedia:

Also, in this page, it says:
4 sockets on Windows 10 Pro for Workstations / Enterprise (due to ProductPolicy)
I know that initial table indicates Enterprise supports only 2 Sockets, but I'm sure that's a mistake. It's not possible the best edition (Enterprise, for Businesses) would have inferior features than a Consumer Edition (Pro and its related).

I doubt whether this topic is of relevance to a load of people on this Forum but it's brilliant having a machine with 4 physical CPU's !!! --not that I do any gaming etc but I do run a load of VM's and that's where it makes a huge difference --being able to run maybe 8 or even a load more VM's concurrently at almost native speed -- PC Heaven !!!

Wow, that's great :-) !!!

Now imagine how a Quantum Computer would perform :D I guess if someday there would be a Quantum CPU, all the apps would open instantly. Just imagine, open MATLAB or Wolfram Mathematica in less than a second. Or even, using proxies inside Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe After Effects and there would not be any delay. Compile your own app using big code of Java, C++, Python and others, like 100x times faster 💯

I’m excited to be given the opportunity for a daily front row view of Australias next Quantum build.

If you pay even more attention, my post had the intention of showing references links and add more information about Enterprise edition (that supports 4 CPUs, not 2).

I’m excited to be given the opportunity for a daily front row view of Australias next Quantum build.
Excellent :-) !! Unfortunately, Quantum Computers for Consumers (I mean, like the current PCs we use daily) would come in the next decade :(

@antspants

You'd probably have to come up here in winter as the power requirements for liquid hydrogen to keep a quantum compuer at its required operating temp of around 2 deg Kelvin (approx -273.deg C) would just about be affordable -- I think trying to run a quantum computer in the centre of the 'OZ Landmass in the middle of summer would just about be "un-doable" or not commercially viable.

(Strangely enough - Liquid Helium - almost impossible to make) is colder than liquid hydrogen - which is surprising since Hydrogen is the lightest and simplest element in the universe --plus making solid helium is all but impossible but Hydrogen can be liquified -- Don't attempt this stuff at home in your kitchen though !!).

Yet they’re doing it, building has already started. I’m just wanting to see the jigsaw puzzle of the actual mainframe, which will be a few years away.

PsiQuantum announced a major milestone in its Brisbane project: a partnership with Linde Engineering to build and deliver one of the largest cryogenic plants ever planned for quantum computing. The plant will be constructed and tested by Linde, then installed at PsiQuantum’s site in Brisbane, where it will provide the cryogenic foundation for the world’s first utility-scale quantum computer.
