Accented characters between recent laptop and old LaserJet 4000

Windows 11
I just bought a laptop with Windows 11 64-bit (EZbook S5, Celeron N4000 2.8GHz, Windows 11, 12GB LPDDR4 256GB SSD, Intel UHD 600)

I added my old HP LaserJet 4000 through TCP/IP and used the generic/text only driver provided by Windows.

When I try to print text in French with accented characters, they are not printed (both from the Notepad or a Web page).

I tried to download the HP PCL 6 driver from 2003, but when I try to use this to update the driver, Windows tells me the folder does not contain a driver for this OS.

Is this a lost cause or is there a solution?

Thanks

A 20+ years old printer? I'd wonder if not having the full HP software it came with is the issue when using other or multiple languages.

A comment: a little thing commonly called "planned obsolescence" is at play with older printers and other devices. When a product is no longer produced and no longer in the supply channels there is no money coming into the company to pay programmers to keep the software in step with the Operating Systems that keep changing. I used to have a Lexmark Optra R that was fine but after about 5 years it became cheaper to get a new printer with a warranty than it was to get the toner cartridge.

The printer is working fine with Windows 10 64-bit on another recent computer and it's such a good printer I'd love to have it work with Window 11.
There's probably a driver working with it.

I'm using an old Laserjet 1020 (not quite as old as yours, but still old)and am just like you because I don't want to give it up. It keeps going and going. It's a shame printers these days are not built as well. Luckily for me, HP issued a Windows 10 driver for mine.

You could try is backup the working driver from Windows 10. I've used a little portable program called Double Driver with good results. DD.exe has to be run as administrator. Download Double Driver - MajorGeeks
When you scan your drive, it will find all non-Microsoft drivers. Choose ONLY your HP driver to back up. It will backup to your documents folder.
Copy the dd folder to a flash drive.

In Win11 Device Manager, right click on your printer, update driver, browse my computer for drivers, then point it to the HP folder that's inside the folder you copied.

Last resort-Yours hasn't had a driver update since 2003 so I doubt it will work, but you can try installing it in compatibility mode from the .exe file.
