Solved Accessing W11 from W7

Hi

I am able to share files between my W11 and W7 computers. They are both plugged into the same Linksys router via Cat5. However, there is an application that I am unable to connect to, from W7 to W11.

See how W11 says "private network"? Even tho I am able to share, I am wondering if this "public" v. "private" thing could be an issue. Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree, but should I try changing that setting in W11? If so, how?

For sharing it should be private network.

I'm sorry but this statement makes no sense to me. Sharing is for files/folder. You can not share applications.

Yeah i tried sharing applications too a while back, JUST to see if it would work. . lol

I didnt say you could share applications, nor did I say I was trying to share applications.

I am trying to connect to an application from from W7 to W11.

I'm not a networking person, but just off hand that sounds problematical.
Why do you need to do that?

It's called VEPro, and enables you to connect multiple computers together and then distribute your processing amongst these machines, be it audio, plug-ins, or MIDI-controlled sample libraries.

Should I change the W11 "private network" to something else? If so, how do I do that?

That is such an unusual specialist application that you might only get suitable suggestions in the publisher's website and, if they have them, user forum.

If you want to find out if anybody here can help you then I suggest you start a new thread that contains VEPro in its title.

But you have told us that there is nothing wrong with your network. Only with your ability to "connect to" that application. Connecting to applications is not a Windows networking capability.

Your network is Private and that is the correct setting for a home network. It allows sharing files & devices such as printers.

It sounds like VEPro is doing some kind of remote IPC between your machines, however, none of us will know exactly what form of IPC it is using, so the best course of action is to use their support forums or contact them directly. There is a possibility that a particular TCP port which VEPro is attempting to use may be closed, so you could run something like WireShark or Fiddler to see what is happening with your network traffic.

Since VEPro is designed for medical professionals, it's doubtful anyone here is familiar with it. That company offers 24/7 support so I would go straight to the source for assistance.

Not speaking for VePro but networking in general. All connected devices should be set as private network.

To access a program on a networked computer set up a Remote Desktop Connection or use third party program such as TeamViewer. Sharing is irrelevant.

Yes you are looking for assistance with the program, since that is the only thing not working. It's a networked program so we need to know what protocol and ports it uses (in case we need to open up some firewall ports). Until then none of us can help you, unless there's someone here that has experience with the program.

But what you could try to do for starters, it's to set both devices to Private Network. Not that it should make any difference in this case. But it won't hurt either.

'Private' is the correct setting, it means that the network you are connecting to is a private one so it's safe to enable sharing. You wouldn't want your shares to be visible if you were connecting to a public network (eg, in a coffee shop).

For remote access, check the settings in Control Panel > System > Allow remote access to your computer.
