RemoteApp seems relevant here, it's still in W11.

Since the debut of RemoteApp in Windows Server 2008, Windows users have been able to enjoy remote applications with the same look and feel as local applications.     UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

W7 doesn't call it 'Private', you set it to Home (or Work) either of which are the same as what W10/11 calls a Private network.

So, I decided to send a support email to the dev, and they tell me that the networking protocols are different. So this is apparently why I can not get it to work.

When you set the network to private make sure you password protect it. It will give you the opportunity to make one in the process. Write it down as it will be the password for all your connected devices. You get to networking by clicking on networking. The rest is self explanatory. :-) Just follow the steps.

I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

See how W11 says "private network"? Even tho I am able to share, I am wondering if this "public" v. "private" thing could be an issue. Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree, but should I try changing that setting in W11? If so, how?

Hi there

I'm absolutely no specialist but I get 100% fazed by some of the convoluted solutions given by so called professionals (not wanting to be racist but most of that problem seems to come from India / vietnam and similar countries) are just mind numbingly inappropriate for typical "home mom and pop domestic situations". And those people get paid shedloads of money too. Perhaps it's all "job preservation at any cost and --screw the customer".

Just enable SMB1, allow "remote connections to this computer" uncheck the lower box reboot and you should be in business. This still works even for old XP systems connecting to NAS devices with TB of disk storage (in XP days 20 MB never mind GB was quite a bit of disk storage !!).

People these days seem to forget the K.I.S.S principle --Keep it Short and Simple. Well I suppose if a lawyer from a local council earns 300 EUR for sending me a letter that I'm 59 secs late with paying a local tax of just 67 EUR !!! .... well 'nuf said (Even here in Iceland we have some hideous politicians too !! that almost make Donald Trump seem like Madame Theresa - atlhough of course the amounts of money are totally different - but the principle is just the same !!).

I am doing some research on this 'enable SMB1', but cant get my head around what I see. Is that something over and above allowing remote connections from system prop?

Server Message Block (SMB) is a protocol for computers to share over the network. SMB 1.0 is the oldest version, and has some security issues. You should only enable it if you have no other choice, such as needing to connect to some older NAS devices, or to a WinXP PC.

A default install of Windows 10/11 supports SMB2 and SMB3, with a preference for using the highest available version. It will however connect using SMB2 to a Windows 7 machine. SMB1 is available, but not enabled by default. Win7 only supports up to SMB 2.1. SMB 3.0 came in with Win8, 3.02 in Win8.1 and 3.1.1 in Win10.

Here my network as seen from a Windows 11 PC, where the Toshiba 2TB share is a usb HDD on my router (SMB 1.5), TOSH-C650D is a Win7 PC (SMB 2.1) and the two W10 and W11 PCs are connected to using SMB 3.1.1.

while there is of course some security issues over SMB1 and ideally you shouldn't use it I doubt if on a HOME LAN if this really is of overriding concern when you just want to share a few files between computers or even devices (firestick / TV etc). Windows defender is pretty good these days at intercepting malware and other nasties. I suspect if SMB1 was totally redundant W11 or perhaps the next version of Windows won't even have the possibility of enabling it.

I agree, and as you can see from my screenshot above I do have SMB1 enabled. In my case it's the only way to connect to a network drive being shared out by plugging it into my router.

There are two parts to SMB1 that could be enabled, the Client and the Server. You only need to enable the Client to be able to connect to a device that only has SMB1. I suspect that it's enabling the Server that is more of a security risk.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.
