  • Staff
New_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove default items on the New context menu for all users in Windows 11.

The New context menu allows users to quickly create a new item in the current location.

The default New context menu items include to create a new Folder, Shortcut, Bitmap image, Text Document, Compressed (zipped) Folder, and Library.

System folders will only have New > Folder available.

Libraries will only have New > Library available.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove items on the New context menu.

  • Option Two: Add or Remove "Shortcut" on New context menu

I did manage to get rid of the .bmp entry in the New Context Menu.
By installing ClassicPaint and removing the modern Paint app.
By installing Classic Paint you will have another entry "Edit with Classic Paint", but that can be switched off in ShellMenuNew.

Thanks ! It works and for me. Btw :
1) It was little difficult to find a version that works and it was at a "setup" version. Firstly i downloaded portable versions and install versions who no works. Finally , i find install version that works OK at Windows 7 Games for Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8..
2) As i take a first look at classic paint it has the same abilities with the new one but the Classic has more beautiful buttons at ribbon.
So 2 in 1 solution !

1. I got Classic Paint from the WinAero site: Link to Classic Paint on WinAero, which appears to link through to the site you found.
Normally I would have showed the link directly, but I was a bit short of time, had to do something else.

2. That exactly was the reason I installed Classic Paint (as I did wit Classic Calculator as well).

PS. The WinAero site is fully reliable, but WinAero itself can be used incorrectly and then you may get problems.
I have not used the program itself for a long time, but the WinAero site is very usefull for many purposes.

Anyway: glad I could help you by my experience, that removing the Paint app does make disappear the New BMP entry. Which of course I have read some day somewhere else...

I dont trust winaero because at the past i had major problems with "Winaero" app. So i did it from win7games.
I fully trust Winaero, you just have to know the implications of its use.
Been using it for years, never had an issue.

So , that was the problem :
I change the shortcuts at "My computer" and after that the file explorer didnt work OK at the desktop folder. It shows different files and shortcuts (Specifically less) than the real ones and it was very slow to show them.
The same problem was presented on 2 different computers and with 2 operating systems each, W10 & 11. None of the solutions I tried fixed the problem (including repair installation), other than a clean install.

@Brink,

panaho has worked out a method of removing the context menu, New, Bitmap image entry. Nobody else was able to do it.
See post #63 [there was a correction in post #71 for New text document, the Bitmap image solution was posted correctly in the first instance].
I turned panaho's solution into a .reg file for convenience - see post #69.

The Windows 10 solution was quite different.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\ShellNew]

I thought you would want to incorporate the solution into this tutorial,
All the best,
Denis

    Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 Build 22631.3447
@Brink,

panaho has worked out a method of removing the context menu, New, Bitmap image entry. Nobody else was able to do it.
See post #63 [there was a correction in post #71 for New text document, the Bitmap image solution was posted correctly in the first instance].
I turned panaho's solution into a .reg file for convenience - see post #69.

I thought you would want to incorporate the solution into this tutorial,
All the best,
Denis
Hello Denis, :alien:

Is the registry key in your REG file unique per system? I don't have it.

Is the registry key in your REG file unique per system?

I did not consider that possibility.

I'll ask WiseWiz to check as well.

Brink,

Oh dear.

The string
ShellNewDisplayName_Bmp
exists in two different keys on one Windows 11 computer and in a [single] different Key on another of mine.
Wisewiz & OAT have reported that they also found it in different Keys.

So I can no longer see how to incorporate the change in a .reg file.
And I cannot see how to choose the correct Key on the one with two entries [I suppose that both might work]. I merely used the first return to my search for it without realising that another hit would have happened further down the Registry.

Oh well,
Denis

It was a good try.
