Personalization Add or Remove Gallery in File Explorer Navigation Pane in Windows 11

  • Staff
Gallery_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Gallery in the navigation pane of File Explorer for your account or all users in Windows 11.

Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361, Microsoft is introducing Gallery, a new feature in File Explorer designed to make it easy to access your photo collection. The content in Gallery is the same as what you see in the All Photos view in the Photos app. Your most recently taken photos appear at the top of Gallery. This includes photos from your phone if you have OneDrive Camera Roll Backup set up.

Gallery displays the contents of the Pictures library. When you include a folder, the files appear in the Gallery but continue to be stored in their original locations.

You can choose which folders are shown in Gallery through the Collection dropdown. You can also add subfolders of existing sources to filter to a subset of your content, such as desktop backgrounds and SD card/camera imports.

Gallery also works from the file picking dialog, bringing that same ease of use to situations such as inserting attachments, building a PowerPoint deck, or crafting social media posts.

A new Add Phone Photos button in the Command Bar in File Explorer Gallery will help with setting up your PC to be ready to show photos from your phone via OneDrive in Gallery. Clicking this button will open a URL with a OneDrive QR code that you can scan with your phone to get started.

If you do not want Gallery in the navigation pane of File Explorer, you can remove it.

Hello, :alien:

I tested on my system, but it doesn't seem the Recycle Bin will respect any set "SortOrderIndex" value for its order on the navigation pane. It doesn't move.

First, thanks. You don't get that enough, even when a lot of people here do thank you.

Second and not to display my ignorance but . . . my wife retired and I bought her a laptop -- one for her alone instead of sharing it with me (I'm sorta jealous because I got her one better than mine . . .) and I'm customizing it for her. This tutorial help me get rid of gallery but there are other icons/folders in the navigation pane I would love to get rid of because all it will do is confuse her (and she is by no means stupid). So, are there other tutorials that tell me how to get rid of (those things above 'This PC' like 'Videos', 'Pictures', 'Music' etc.) I'd rather have these listed either in libraries or in her profile or even gone altogether. Why are there so many duplicates of the same pointers, here, anyway? I've been doing pc stuff since the early '80s and I don't find all this duplication at all helpful. And why is there a Desktop listed within Desktop???

Sorry, accidently stepped on my soapbox . . .

Anyway, I've been searching through the personalization tutorials for the past couple of hours (and I keep getting sidetracked by finding new and nifty ways to turn on/off things I didn't know about before -- so, thanks again). I'm sure they're here somewhere and I'll eventually find them but a man my age has to manage time or I get lost on rabbit trails . . .

note: os and os-user files were orginally installed on two different drives for reasons related to the content creation purpose for this computer. There are multiple additional hdd drives on this computer but it seems unnecessary to mention them as they are likely to be germane to the current problem.

Hello, :alien:

Thank you for the kind words.

A lot of these appear as duplicates since they may be included under more than one section in the navigation pane of File Explorer.

If you have Show all folders turned on for the navigation pane, it may show a lot more of the duplicates like "Desktop".

Please feel free to post for help to remove anything else you can't find in the Tutorials.

(chuckles) . . . of course, you nailed it in one. That link did the trick. I'm still going to keep exploring the tutorials for the myriad of things I still don't know how to do (or do efficiently). Thanks, again!!

Hmm, before writing previous post I downloaded (both current and all users) and none worked even with relog/reboot. Now after You asked I dled it again, same name, size and what's inside and current user worked... Interesting

Hello, :alien:

I checked on build 26217 (Canary), and the tutorial is still working on it.

Double check to make sure the registry entries were added to see if there may have been an issue with merging the REG files.

Reg files did not work for me (W11 Pro 23H2 22631.3672 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1009.0). Dug into the registry to find that I only have a 'NameSpace' Key and not "NameSpace_36354489" that the reg file was trying to edit. Deleting both "{e88865ea-0e1c-4e20-9aa6-edcd0212c87c}" for the gallery and "{f874310e-b6b7-47dc-bc84-b9e6b38f5903}" for the home worked well.

Edited to add: thank you for the tutorials and help! I've successfully used many registry edits from this site!

Hello Ron, :alien:

Having an older build is indeed why you still have the value under the "NameSpace_41040327" key instead of "NameSpace".
