You finally did a Repair install the way I told you to do on post #7I have done disk and memory tests -- no problem.
I downloaded the ISO image in a few minutes -- network speed is not an issue.
What I did in the end was try reinstalling from the ISO image, and when it got stuck checking for updates at 46%, I went out shopping for a few hours. When I came back it was ready to play ball. Seems I just needed at ***lot*** of patience.
And now it's reinstalled and says it's up to date.
Thanks for all the advice, everyone. And I will do further hardware checks, just in case.
