Version 23H2 (OS Build 22621.3447)
Hi All -

I have Win 11 Pro , and MS Office 2016. I have noticed that when I bring up task manager, artificial intelligence (AI) is present in processes for either Outlook or Word when opened. Why? What is its purpose? What does it do?

Thanks.

Hi,
A full process name along with the process's properties would help.
And a screenshot would be the topping on the cake.

Reasons to choose the 64-bit version

Computers running 64-bit versions of Windows generally have more resources such as processing power and memory, than their 32-bit predecessors. Also, 64-bit applications can access more memory than 32-bit applications (up to 18.4 million Petabytes). Therefore, if your scenarios include large files and/or working with large data sets and your computer is running 64-bit version of Windows, 64-bit is the right choice.

AI is not present of the 64 bit version of Office 2021 -same as current 365-
Can anyone running MS Office 64 bit confirm/unconfirm the presence of AI.exe process please.

Why are you using the 32-bit version of Office on a 64-bit system?
Because I installed it without uninstalling Office 2007, which I regard as a better version.
I just wanted to be able to understand what people were talking about in Office 365 / 2021 threads.

Sorry this does not make sense to me. You could have still gone for the 64-bit version.
Anyway, if you are happy, good for you.

I did read it, and aside from saving on memory usage, what does AI benefit me in using Outlook or Word? Does it tell me a phrase is wrong? Or that I shouldn't put a comma there? Or is it mostly to benefit Microsoft? Would I be better off without it?

I should have explained further.
If an MSOffice 2021 [or 365, I suppose] installation detects an existing 32-bit version then it installs itself as 32-bit.
No choice is presented to the user.

I'm going to have to remove Office 2007 sometime soon in order to re-use my licence on a new computer.
Then I'll take the opportunity to reinstall Office 2021 and it will default to a 64-bit installation.

All the best,
Denis

I see, thanks, you had said you had upgraded., I should have known it was 32-bit.
AI.exe is present in the 64-bit version in the Program files folder but I can't seem to trigger it.
I did not get my MS certification for Office products so there you have it. I don't know.

Can anyone running MS Office 64 bit confirm/unconfirm the presence of AI.exe process please.
On page 3 of that MSAnswers thread OFFICE16 ai.exe - MSCommunity, that MS employee explains the state of AI in MSOffice by referring to build numbers rather than x86/x64.
Perhaps that means the limitation you refer to no longer exists.

I think this MS article attempts to address your question.
Intelligent applications from Microsoft - MS

All the best,
Denis
Hi Denis -
Thanks for the article. All this tech is a two-edged sword. While it may offer someone the ability to do something, like running a complex machine without experience, democratization has a down-side. Digitizing commercial photography is an example of something that destroyed a whole industry where one could actually make a good living, having accrued experience and expensive barriers to entry (i.e. large-format cameras and lenses), to something that everyone can do with the phone in their pocket. All of it looked good on the surface. A photographer no longer had to pay for film and processing, or go to labs. On the other hand, there are hardly any labs, no film, processing, or supportive businesses to speak of. Images are traded, copied, given away with ease. While an architectural photographer could make a good living from large-format images in the past, now there are only real estate images for $10 or $15 each, since you can control perspective in Photoshop instead of the camera.

What will be the next industry to be cast by the wayside because our computers and AI can do all that?

Thanks for the article.
I've also been reading it and have altered my earlier post.
This MS article claims to address your question.
Intelligent applications from Microsoft - MS
but it's mostly waffle.
There are some specific benefits claimed on pages 8, 9 of Everyday AI in MS 365
  • Word etc improved spelling & grammar checks.
  • PowerPoint improved captions & subtitles.
  • Teams simultaneous language translation. I can see this as being useful as long as it is accurate.
  • There might be some other concrete benefits stated but my brain melted.

But if you think like that, at the dawn of electricity one could ask:
'What will happen to the thousands of candlelight maintenance crews that go through entire city blocks to light those candles at night and extinguish them at daylight?"
Progress is unstoppable & manpower is expensive. It's been that way since the industrial revolution began.
The art world will have to go through adaptation, it was said that painting was dead at the advent of photography.
It was said that theater performances would disappear once movies began screening, and on, and on.
It's best to adapt, train, retrain & train again. Talent always shines through. There is no point worrying about it.
