All internet browsers stop working after a while even though WIFI is working

Hello,

First post here and I need help!



After a while, ALL of my internet browsers stop working even though my WIFI is working (my desktop whatsapp, telegram etc continue to receive messages, my TV netflix is working fine, etc).

I tried pinging google on CMD and it shows no packet loss.

I restart my computer and my browsers work again, and after a short while they stop working again.

I tried a system update as well as reverting to an older update of Windows 11 but this did not help.





I first noticed this problem after the following W11 quality updates (could be coincidence)

- 2022-12 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11 for x64 (KB5021090)

- 2022-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 for x64-based Systems (KB5021234)



Please help! This is so frustrating!

Hi, @chahnjung and Welcome to the forums!

First off - I recommend that you fill in the System specs for your computer - it will help troubleshoot issues, particularly the amount of free storage space as well as the amount of RAM that you have, not to mention things like your connection speed.

The reason for that is that in situations like this, there are a lot of variables involved, and it could be many different things, including what @Fabler said about it possibly being a third party Anti-virus software that may be running. It may be something more sinister, or something much less obvious, also, so information gathering is the first step.

Also, can you report what the full Windows version is from running the Winver program? Easiest way to do that is using the keystroke combination Win + R and then typing winver in the Run box that pops up. Alternatively, you can simply search for it from the search bar in your Start menu.

Get that info to us in your next post and it will help troubleshoot better.

Welcome to the forum. Try these suggestions if you haven't already.

1. powercycle your router. Restart computer.

2. Run network troubleshooter. Settings- System-troubleshoot-other troubleshooters-Internet connections-RUN

3. Reset network adapters
Reset Network Adapters in Windows 11 Tutorial

4. Attached is @FreeBooter .bat file which resets network components. RIGHT click on the .bat file and select run as administrator.

5. Check for file system corruption. Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
After system file checker completes, make note of whether it found and corrected any problems. If found and corrected, restart
If it found problems it could not correct, in command window type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth.
Restart

6. Change power settings for wireless adapter in Power Options. Control Panel-power options-Balanced should be checked
Next to balanced, click change plan settings
Click Change Advanced Power Settings
Expand Wireless Adapter Settings
Expand Power Saving Mode
Under Setting change it to Maximum Performance

7. Open Control Panel-device manager
Expand Network Adapters
Right click on your wireless adapter and select properties
In Power Management tab- Uncheck 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'

Note: Changing these power settings uses more power, thereby affecting your battery if you use the device on battery power.

You can always boot into a clean boot state to eliminate any piece of software being the culprit. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

If none of that works, I would look for something more sinister such as malware. Run Malwarebytes.

Try to setup DOH (DNS) within the browser.
May only solve the problem for the browser(s) concerned.

Change the computer DNS settings for the network adapter concerned to, say, CloudFlareDNS settings

So, as the OP noted:

  1. Browser stops working, after a certain amount of time. This could be anything, for sure.
  2. All other apps that require online connectivity continue to work. This indicates that it is probably not a hardware level issue, because only the browser stops working.
A look at DNS (DOH specifically) is a good idea.

However, it could also be a Parental Control setting coming into play that specifically limits the amount of browser activity allowed.

@chahnjung - Does anyone else have control over your PC, like a parent, sibling, or your employer?

I had repeated disconnects and the Internet was slow as molasses.

Problems went away after I updated my wireless driver.

I had repeated disconnects and the Internet was slow as molasses.

Problems went away after I updated my wireless driver.

Worth a shot, but do realize that his Internet connection is not disconnecting.

Only the browser stops working. Everything else using the Internet still works.

1. powercycle your router. Restart computer.
I do that countless times, due to bad Halo gameplay experiences. Sometimes, it seems to get into a funk where I possibly keep getting packet loss until I reboot the router!
