Hi,
Only good thing is these z690 boards asus drilled both cpu mounting holes in them so older back plates will work for same older coolers
So no new back plate needed.

I knew when November came I'd have buyers' remorse. Oh well can't keep up, and if Microsoft breaks unsupported CPUs on Win 11 the Z790 is right behind anyway and promising to break all limits and more. The PCIe slot release button should have been on boards for awhile.

Although my PC urgently demands upgrade or, better, replacement, I still haven't decided which of upcoming MBs to buy. The problem is, I would like to have some advanced features, so MB will not become outdated too soon. In particular, it should support DDR5 memory, Thunderbolt interface and at least one built-in PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot. And I am almost sure that in ~2 years these requirements will become a standard de facto.

Unfortunately, only the top-level, most pricey (and most large EATX, so need a special PC case) ASUS board ROG Maximus Z690 Extreme has all these options right now, other don't have some of them. I don't need the board with DDR4 (even though I could borrow the memory from current MB), no Thunderbolt or without a slot for upcoming M.2 SSD. MBs from other companies like MSI and Gigabyte also don't have these features.

The early birds adopters should pay much more?

Here yah go. ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Extreme Glacial (WiFi 6E) LGA 1700 (Intel 12th Gen) EATX Gaming Motherboard (Integrated EK Ultrablock, PCIe 5.0, DDR5, 24+1 105A Power Stages, 5x M.2, 1xPCIe 5.0 M.2) - Newegg.com

That's a bit of an outlier, though.

It wouldn't be a large fraction of the budget I've seen some gamers have for their gear, though.

We are living in a wild world when motherboards creep to $2000. I had a hard time spending $530 for my Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Xtreme board (system one). Now the norm seems to be double to four times that just to get a good high end board o_O

Yeah, EATX boards are expensive; However, I wouldn't say they need "special" PC cases, just a case that supports EATX.

Both these cases definitely support EATX boards. Cooler Master Mastercase H500M (Mesh)....

Blowin in the wind.jpg

Phantek's Enthoo Luxe...

Backup-System_A.jpg

Both cases comfortably support my EATX boards - Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Xtreme, and a Gigabyte G1 Sniper 5 (Z87 board).

I don't need the board with DDR4 (even though I could borrow the memory from current MB), no Thunderbolt or without a slot for upcoming M.2 SSD. MBs from other companies like MSI and Gigabyte also don't have these features.

I'm utterly confused by your meaning above? What features don't you think Gigabyte has that Asus does?

Gigabyte boards pretty much feature anything Asus does. For me, the only thing I wish Gigabyte did was provide a better BIOS layout.

Dru2, thank you for info about cases, especially a second one, which is close to my current, but smaller case. As for Gigabyte and MSI, I haven't found the MBs with PCIe 5.0 M.2, all models I saw have PCIe 4.0 M.2 (or I have missed them). Maybe some have an optional board with 5.0 M.2 slots which uses a free PCIe slot, as on mid-range Z690 from ASUS, but it's not the best solution, so I would prefer a built-in slot. And I am almost sure that such boards will come soon or later, the question is, how long need to wait...

I'm an Asus fan all the way and yeah @Dru2 Gigabyte bios layout does need to get it's act together. But I just want to say that last year I didn't follow my own guidelines and got bit.

Never buy a new system until it has at least 6 months on the open market. With my ROG Strix Z590-A Gaming WiFi 6 and the new USB 4080 codec. I had to wait about 6 months to finally get a driver that worked properly and the codec needed a firmware update to get the snap crackle pop out of it.

Still, it's nice to look at new toys. Can't wait to build one for a customer

Wait for mid 2022 with Raptor lake and I'm sure they will all have PCIe 5.0 m.2. I have it on one slot m.2

Well I'm a Gigabyte fan. My last 5 boards have been Gigabyte going back to 2010 when I bought my first one. Before that it was Intel and Abit.

Anyway, whether Gigabyte or Asus, both companies produce some very good boards. That said, I won't be seeing a new build for at least another year or two. Need to get my money's worth out of the expense I put into my current built from 2019.

And Gigabyte's BIOS layout isn't that bad, I'm use to it now, I just like that setup Asus has. That said, I've never actually played with an Asus BIOS as I've never owned an Asus board. I'm just going by the looks I've seen in videos. I always thought Asus's BIOS looked way better than Gigabyte's.

That's me.

Yeah I'm aware of that. In fact there's some at overclock.net here: (Gigabyte Z390 AORUS Owners Thread) that also make modified BIOS's for my board. That said, I've no interest in messing with modified BIOS's; especially since I no longer overclock.

Anyway, I'm talking purely aesthetics not performance or options - I just think Asus's UEFI layout/design looks better than Gigabyte's.

Thanks though (y)

Hi,
ATM giga is becoming quite hard to rma hardware.

I don't know what "ma hardware" is, but I do know I don't and never did have hardware issues with any of their boards. I suspect this will be true when I decide to purchase the next one.

At any rate, and for clarity, this is not about Gigabyte vs. Asus (for me), and I wish no part of that so....

Hi,
ROG prices are completely stupid even more than z590 are.

Amen. I think I am going to sit this this generation out, especially since the RAM will be problematic. Going for 13th Gen when things have shaken out. Memory should be more performant and cheaper then.
