Summary​

Under specific microarchitectural circumstances, a register in “Zen 2” CPUs may not be written to 0 correctly. This may cause data from another process and/or thread to be stored in the YMM register, which may allow an attacker to potentially access sensitive information.

Mitigation​

AMD recommends applying the µcode patch listed below for AMD EPYC™ 7002 Processors, and applying BIOS updates that include the following AGESA™ firmware versions for other affected products. AMD plans to release to the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) the AGESA™ versions on the target dates listed below. Please refer to your OEM for the BIOS update specific to your product.

Because a lot of these use similar attack vectors to Spectre and Meltdown, or else derived from them, and the initial research that went into discovering those two.

And those were initially discovered in 2017. So, yeah, before then these side--channel attacks had not been discovered.

A CPU vulnerability is a security flaw in a computer processor that can be exploited to gain unauthorized access to data or other sensitive information. These vulnerabilities can be exploited by malicious software, such as viruses and malware, to steal passwords, financial information, or other sensitive data.

There are two main types of CPU vulnerabilities:

  • Speculative execution vulnerabilities allow malicious software to trick the CPU into speculatively executing instructions that it should not be allowed to execute. This can be used to access data that the software should not have access to.
  • Cache side-channel vulnerabilities exploit the way that the CPU caches data in memory. By measuring the time it takes for the CPU to access different pieces of data, malicious software can infer which data is stored in the cache. This can be used to steal sensitive data that is not directly accessible to the software.
The two most well-known CPU vulnerabilities are Meltdown and Spectre. Meltdown is a speculative execution vulnerability that affects Intel processors. Spectre is a cache side-channel vulnerability that affects Intel, AMD, and ARM processors.

There are a number of mitigations that can be applied to protect against CPU vulnerabilities. These include:

  • Software updates that patch the vulnerabilities.
  • Hardware updates that disable speculative execution.
  • Operating system and application changes that make it more difficult for malicious software to exploit the vulnerabilities.
CPU vulnerabilities are a serious security threat. However, there are a number of mitigations that can be applied to protect against them. It is important to keep your software up to date and to use security best practices to protect your data.

In addition to Meltdown and Spectre, there are a number of other CPU vulnerabilities that have been discovered in recent years. These include:

  • Foreshadow
  • Zombieload
  • LazyFP
  • Retbleed
  • SQUIP
These vulnerabilities are all different, but they all exploit the same basic principle: that the CPU is not always able to keep track of what data is being accessed. This can be used by malicious software to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.

The best way to protect yourself from CPU vulnerabilities is to keep your software up to date and to use security best practices. You should also be aware of the latest vulnerabilities and how they can be exploited.

Looks like it's AMD's turn. I have a feeling AMD will deal with the issue in a much more timely fashion than Intel. In fact, I'm not even sure Intel has addressed the problem at the architectural level yet. From my understanding it's still just smoke and mirrors, microcode that can be easily dodged by savvy hackers. Kind of scary when you think that nearly every CPU Intel has made for the last 20 years is vulnerable to Spectre/Meltdown.

They fail to put in their headlines "In one scenario"

But all the side-channel attack fixes thus far have been at the application layer.

Technically it is still not the thing, it requires PC to be infected with actual malware. I have disabled SPECTRE mitigations to regain performance. I have not updated BIOS since 2020 (it causes BSOD), besides the insecure BIOS gives much better score in benchmarks.

Turns out I was wrong. A new BIOS has just (in the last day) been posted with 1.2.0.A. Phew.

However, with regards to the C version, I guess we'll just have to be careful until it eventually makes an appearance.

Yep. For me... the BIOS with the "A" version came out May 23rd this year.

Is your B450 Tomahawk still working? Mine died unexpectedly in August, 2022, when I just got it on January 3, 2020. Seems that these likely can't handle 8c/16t Ryzens. My BIOS was flashed to 1E and it was working all along until suddenly a year, if not two years later. It just won't power on anymore. I can't smell anything fried. One thing to also check for: Thermal pads on the MOSFETs, because they may be oozing oil!
