Hi folks
Anybody still using Windows 10 -- as the title says today (Oct 24) is last day for updates / maintenance before EOL

I'm testing a W10 Win Pro system on a W11 unsupported laptop to see if it updates via using a VM -- in KVM/QEMU you can set the CPU type to HYPERVISOR DEFAULT which passes the Windows 11 eligibility test. Use the emulated TPM too and just use UEFI boot, not secure boot.

This now passes

That's also an option but I'm just trying to see if I can force a Win 11 update on to an unsupported laptop as an exercise -- I know one can install New using dism /Apply-Image and bcdboot but I want to see if I can update an existing system.

Laptop is old hp envy cpu is intel i5 6th gen, intel gpu (integrated), 8GB Ram, internal 256GB ssd.

yes that will work - but since I already have a VM I think my method is far simpler -- also I will use the Windows MCT which will install an early edition of W11 which can then be copied to physical system and then use WU to "modernise it".

I can't be bothered with all the messing around with drivers etc etc-.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Perhaps the UK gets a different date to the EU and EEA. Anyway it's still coming up so anybody running W10 get all the updates etc before "The closing Bell".

Anyway typo on post title !!!!!

Using the MCT - been offered the W11 update -- and it says IT'S FREE -- but I'll see what happens next.

Was thinking about upgrading my old HP ProBook 4540s to Windows 11. It came with Windows 7 (OEM marker found) and I upgraded to Win 10 Professional direct from MS. It has a 3rd gen Intel Core i3, 16GB RAM, UEFI and Secure Boot, no TPM.

How do you think that system would fare running Windows 11? :unsure:

I think you need people who understand Windows a lot better than me --I just feel that an i5 even Gen 6 is more than capable of running Windows 11 - especially if you aren't a serious gamer or mega scientific user who needs serious cpu power and graphics. On Windows I do mainly "Officy type stuff" plus a bit of video (photoshop) processing and some DVD and CD ripping etc.

In theory an i3 should be capable - and for the TPM you can either install an emulated one or bypass the thing by using rufus to create an iso which has options to bypass TPM requirements etc.

Anyway hope to finish "this little project" today !!!
