I found these, which come from Yiddish.

“If the rich could hire people to die for them, the poor would make a living.”

“Don’t be so humble — you’re not that great.”

Often attributed to Golda Meir. Blunt Yiddish-style humility correction.

And two from Italian friends;

"We only laugh because it hurts too much to cry"

"The mother of the idiot is always pregnant"

And a few from China

“He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.”

“To know the road ahead, ask those coming back.”

Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy

In a choice between the two, dishonersty is the worst policy. Hardly an aphorism!
