Are chipset drivers necessary? And will other devices like Nvme drive or USB work without them

To my knowledge, A chipset is a set of electronic components on a motherboard that manages data flow between the CPU, memory, and peripherals, does that mean a PC without them is useless? Could you clarify it please as I'm not tech savvy

If the system is set in such a way that the drivers are installed automatically, they will (hopefully) do so. In the early times of computing all drivers had to be installed "by hand", nowadays Windows itself is very much capable of getting the right drivers for the right purpose. Most drivers will be installed at system install time, but others still need care of the person that does the installation.

And some people don't like to have the system decide what drivers have to be updated. They rather update only if a driver does not function or has a known vulnerability. But if you're not that technical, you better leave it to the system to decide what drivers need which updates.

Q: Are chipset drivers necessary?

A: Absolutely. Don't leave home without them.



Besides Windows Update, the only things I update regularly are the BIOS and the chipset drivers.
Every other driver on Win 10 and Win 11, dates from May 2020.

And... I only update 3rd party programs...

...oh yeah, mostly never.


Infections = zero
Freezes = zero
Crashes = zero
BSODs = zero

Pretty much: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Although the Device Manager shows the information files as "drivers", the "Intel(R) Chipset Device Software" doesn’t contain any real driver (= .SYS file), but just textmode (= .INF) files, which
a) let the OS know, that for the related Intel Chipset Device a driver is neither needed nor available
b) gives the user the information, that the related device is an Intel one.
None of the Windows Operating Systems needs the .INF files for a proper functionality.
The Intel Chipset "drivers" don’t have any impact on the performance of the related system.

They are inf files ( text files) which provide descriptions in device manager. They are not drivers.


Your other link is AMD not Intel.
