Windows 11
I'm have a little/lot of trouble getting Windows 10 Update to say the new system I'm building is ready to upgrade to Windows 11.

The MB is a ASRock B550 Phantom (BIOS Version 2.40) with a 5600X CPU, 2X8GB of G.Skill FlareX 3200-14 Memory, a Samsung 960 EVO NVMeSSD (250GB) and a EVGA GTX1600 Video Card. Windows 10 was initially installed on the NVMe drive when it was reformatted by Windows as an MBR drive. For some reason no matter what I did Windows install always converted the drive back to the MBR structure. After much screwing around I converted the drive to the GPT structure using the Microsoft mbr2gpt utility. I also made the following BIOS settings to make Windows boot up on the GPT drive.

The BIOS settings are now set as follows:

AMD fTPM Switch - AMD CPU fTPM
Security Device Support - Enabled
Secure Boot - Enabled
Secure Boot Mode -Standard
CMS (Compatibility Support Mode) - CMS Disabled
All the other BIOS settings are at defaults.

Everything seems to work as advertised - except - Windows does not seem to think the system is Windows 11 ready!!

I have attached screen snapshots to show my problem(s).

I'm ready to try running Repair from the Windows 10 install USB and/or just try to force an update to Windows 11 via the downloaded USB version.

Help appreciated I'm running out of ideas on what is going wrong. I have Window 11 running for many months via the automatic update on three other AMD systems with no issues - in fact I actually think I like it.

@Ken429

The following is from your motherboard manual.

1. Enable CSM
2. Set both the OpROM items to: "Do not Launch".
3. If there is the choice for Windows UEFI (or similar), under Secure Boot... choose that.
[your manual doesn't show me your Secure Boot choices]

That should take care of the BIOS items.

As for upgrading to Windows 11... you can just do it manually with an In-Place Upgrade.

In-Place Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11...

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Get the Windows 11 ISO image and save it to your desktop...

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

You could also, just do a clean install of Windows 11...

There's a free program called: Macrium Reflect. It's backup software.
For that reason alone, it's worth it.

But, on it's bootable Rescue media is a very handy tool called "Fix Windows boot problems".
This tool will do exactly that... fix most Windows boot problems. :-)

Love Macrium Reflect been using for years. Thank you for the reply, I guess I have got to start reading the manual and ignore the "Google" solutions. The other three systems were W11 ready with no BIOS changes required as best I can remember. This MB seems to make it a challenge. Anyway, I made the changes documented in the manual - CSM - Enabled and Launch PXE OpROM Policy and Launch Storage OpROM Policy - both set to Do Not Launch.

System boots and runs W10 with no issues. However, I still get the not ready for W11 notification from Windows Update. See Attachment. What else am I missing or is this just a bug in Windows Update?

Check the Secure Boot options. They aren't shown in the User Manual pdf for your motherboard.

You chose: Secure Boot Mode -Standard
I'd like to know what the other options are.

You could also run this tool. It's has better explanations.
You want to scroll down and get: WhyNotWin11.exe ...and run that.

It will look something like this... all green is what you want.
The DirectX test takes about a minute, so wait for it. All the others are fast.

Once again I used the "Googled" solution - Changed Secure Boot Mode from Custom to Standard. Could that be the issue? W11 wants Secure Boot Keys?

I don't know. What's under... Custom?

Mine looks like this... and I need to choose the option for a GPT disk.

Image1.png

I have all those other settings too. But they have nothing to do with passing the Win 11 tests.

On MY motherboard, the Windows UEFI option goes with a GPT disk
The other option is for an MBR disk.

Short version: The Secure Boot setting (for Windows 11), has to match your disk type (GPT or MBR) or it won't boot.

The last line in your MBR2GPT pic says, you need to change the setting to match your new GPT disk.

Image1.png

I'm pretty sure, that this is why you're failing the Windows 11 compatibility test.
That tool I linked in post #4, will probably pass all the tests, except the Secure Boot test.

So... we probably need to choose the "Custom" option under Secure Boot.
But which option we need under "Custom", I'm not sure, because they don't show it in your downloadable manual.

I tried changing the Secure to Custom and set the default keys. No success.

I'll be going back to the drawing board and try to figure out how I tell the system to boot UEFI mode. W10 must not care since I am booting W10 from the GPT disk. The BIOS has all kinds of settings under Key Management when Custom is selected that do not appear in the Manual that came with the MB! I'll run the program you suggested and see if that sheds any light on the issue.

I'll also dig into the X470 and X570 Taichi MB's that I have running W11 to see what setting(s) they have that make W11 happy. Stay tuned.

It would help if you ran that GitHub tool. As i said... it will tell you exactly why you are failing the Win 11 compatibility test.

Also, if you're booting Win 10 form the GPT disk... then your Secure Boot setting in the BIOS is OK.
Don't mess with the Secure Boot keys stuff. Just leave that all at defaults.

In case anybody's interested, I just installed W11 over W10 on the B550/5600X system with no issues. W11 seems to be happy with the BIOS settings and hardware. So... it would appear that the ASRock B550 MB has something that causes Windows 10 Update to identify a problem that apparently does not exist?!

GHot,
I forgot to say thanks for all the help.

I think it's more the fault of the MS Tool that checks for compatibility.
They had problems with the tool before.

Glad you got it worked out. :-)
