Auto login on Windows (chrome or firefox)?

Version 24H2.

This SEEMS like it ought to be simple, but.

On my firefox desktop I want to click an icon on the desktop and have the browser go to the address, put in the username, NOT do anything with the password, then sit in the browser waiting for me to give it the password.

So, I want to open (click on) website XYZ and have it open XYZ, put the right address in the browser, fill the username then wait for me to give it a password, then login and proceed. This SEEMS like it should be dead simple in EITHER Firefox OR Chrome, but so far, despite wasting WAY too much time following dead ends, I still can’t get this to work.

Is this just not possible in Windows (Firefox OR Chrome?) or am I missing something? And if you DO have a good idea how to do this can you keep it as simple and straightforward as possible, ‘cause after wasting a ton of time my brain is fried and I’m not sure WHAT I’m doing any more!

The "cookies" at whatever website, are what remembers your user name.
These cookies are stored in your browser.
Clearing ALL cookies, will clear the user name, form a site requiring a login, that you go to often.

I run CCleaner, a couple times a day.
If left to itself, CCleaner would erase the cookies that should remember my user name.

The point is... clearing ALL the cookies, (however it's done), will prevent the browser from remembering your user name.

Here's how I got around that with CCleaner...

For those sites I want to keep the cookies for... like my ElevenForum login... I use the Cookies filter in CCleaner.

...then read what comes after. It will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.





NOTE: Browsers usually have a setting that will "clear cookies on... (shutdown of the browser).
I don't enable those settings. As mentioned above... I use CCleaner to handle the cookies.

For example... in Firefox, the setting is located here... if that box is checked,
Firefox will never remember your user name.




I don't use Chrome, so I don't know where their setting for this, is located.








SO... if you want a site to remember your user name, you need to figure out... what is clearing your cookies.
It'll either be your browser settings, or some 3rd party program that's clearing the cookies.


Once you figure out how your cookies are being cleared... you can whitelist the cookies for those sites where you want your user name... remembered.

You also need to choose which browser is your "chosen" browser. You can get from one to the next with the "chosen" one.

I do not think that you can do this natively in Windows without a third party app.
I use a password manager (Roboform) and it works exactly like you say. Roboform is integrated into all my browsers on all my devices, both Windows, iOS and Android.. For any site I go to that uses credentials, Roboform asks me if I want it to remember it. I say yes and it records the URL and the credentials. All my logins are synced to all my browsers and on all my Devices where I have installed Roboform.

I can go to any of the stored sites simply by clicking the Roboform icon on my browser toolbar. I select the site and Roboform does the rest. If I manually go to s URL, the Roboform icon shows up on the login screen. All I have to do is click it and it fills in the username and password.

All of my logins are encrypted, stored in Roboform cloud, and inaccessible wthout my 16 digit master password. I store no passwords on my devices.The only password I have to remember is Roboform's master password and I am able to set Roboform as to how often it asks me to enter it. Mine is set to once every 12 hours but you can set the time to how often you want.

I've used Roboform for over 20 years and can't do without it. There are a number of other good password managers out there, too.

I had a feeling this might not be a trivial as I'd hoped!

What has me confused is my wife, a very NON-technical person has gotten her laptop, in Chrome, to somehow go in at startup, start Chrome and calendar and be ready to do work. She CANNOT remember what she did and swears it was "something she stumbled on". But, I've seen it work.

I can't figure out what she did but I can't get the same thing to happen for me in Firefox.

Fortunately, its just a minor annoyance having to manually restart a few programs a few times a day, but it's weird. I'll look at Roboform.
