I tried it and got sufficient additional space for icons on the Desktop. I moved one icon after hiding, unhide and the icon moved back, appears to be a 'feature', not necessarily a 'bug'. Moving the mouse to temporarily show the Taskbar doesn't disturb the icons.

What build do you have? Is it 21H2 or 22H2?
I have tried this in 22H2 22621.819 and the desktop icons stayed where they were.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I have seen similar strange effects when on the desktop when the size or resolution of the screen is changed, and auto Arrange is on. By changing the functionality of the taskbar you are changing the Height of the screen that results in the arrangement grid changing and Icons moving around

Whilst the desktop is behind the panel, I click on autohide taskbar and I can see the icons shooting all over the screen. Still on the same I untick the autohide and the icons all return to their previous, correct, positions.
