Autosave not working to local drive

Windows 11 Pro - version 24H2
I bought Word 2021 recently. It's working great except that it won't autosave to my local drive. Even though I went to Options \ Save and selected "Save to computer by default" and restarted the computer, I can't get the message "This file needs to be saved in the cloud first."

It wont. If you turn off save to OneDrive it turns off Autosave.

It probably is working but you're not supposed to see it. That type of autosave in Word is a failsafe backup option in case your device crashes mid-document. When re-started the user will receive a message whether that autosaved document should be recovered

It's not autosave in the sense of progressively saving a document under construction

You're confusing with automatically saving to OneDrive as direct storage option.

Get in the habbit of Ctrl+S key whilst you’re working. I stress, no OneDrive save no Austosave. It’s been like this I believe since Office 2019.

For those who are Microsoft 365 subscribers, Autosave in Word works just fine. I leave Autosave turned ON.

That’s what I thought. But when I did a search, several sources said it was possible, which confused me. Sok, I decided to check with this group.

It should still have the option to Save AutoRecovey information every so many minutes and a default file location (I hope)

I'm using 2007 and 2019 not 2021 so I can't confirm.

I find it odd that a lesser known, such as Notepad++, can implement such an Autosave feature, but, a leading software developer just can't!?!?!? 🤷‍♂️

I just checked my Notepad++ and it's not there so I googled it and it says
Notepad++ doesn't have built-in autosave by default, but you can enable it using the
AutoSave plugin

It does have auto backup setting though
