Good Afternoon Folks:
About a month ago my APC UPS 630 failed. Like most men, I decided to deal with it later. Well, we just had a 23 hour power failure which is not normal in my area of Ontario Canada.

I'm not sure what to replace the old UPS with?, I don't have/need a "smart phone, therefor my PC is my only link to the outside world for news and emergency information. The UPS system only allows me to shut your PC down safely after about 5 minutes? I'd like something that will keep my PC & Monitor powered so I can check on emergency conditions periodically.

I'm thinking a "battery bank"?, but the question is, how big? cuz bigger is more expensive. All I need is enough power to run my "normal average" computer tower and my monitor for about 1-2 hours total. I'd like to just turn the power on for like 5 minutes to check the situation and then turn it off, to check again in say another hour.
Comments, Advice would be appreciated
Thanks: 😊

Yes, it's a desktop PC.
I'm not sure what you meant by "And is just the power that isn't working"?

If you want something relatively inexpensive but that can support power longer than a consumer-grade UPS, maybe one of these:

They use Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, which are supposed to avoid the fire hazard associated with lithium ion.

The Oukitel P1000 Plus has a capacity of about 1kWh.

A poster in another forum I frequent swears by them.

Buy a Laptop, one with a long battery life and a PD port for charging. You can then buy additional powerbank(s) for that also conforming to PD standards.

Consider a UPS with an external battery connection, that will extend the runtime to hours instead of minutes. With that capability, you can run the computer for 10-15 minutes, shut it down for several hours, then run the computer for 15 minutes again.

You could also just consider a tablet that charges with a USB-C power pack and a larger power bank. For emergency use, you'd probably have around $300 total invested and could likely have power for days with this powerpack and a tablet.

How long do you think I can run my desktop and monitor with a UPC Back Ups 630?

How long do you think I can run my desktop and monitor with a UPC Back Ups 630?
Probably not more than 10-15 minutes max. I have a CyberPower 1500VA UPS (1000AW), and I get about 40 minutes until it's dead. It's running my large 45" monitor, the computer, the network switch, and the VoIP adapter for my "landline". I have a separate UPS for the Verizon ONT fiber box and the router & another network switch. My computer draws around 160W and the UPS "thinks" it can last for 53 minutes, realistically I think more like 35-40 minutes.

Another option is a power inverter for your car that produces 120VAC. You can use that to power the UPS and you have the option of running the engine to charge the car battery for longer outages.

I recommend you first define your exact requirements. How much power do you actually need, how long at a maximum do you actually have to have it power the computer, what are any other power requirements to maintain Internet connectivity, etc.

I ordered this:

I'll test how long my PC and monitor will run, if It's not long enough, I'll send it back.

Being in Ontario I guess you have to add a step, get up on the roof and clear the snow off the solar panels.

It's not a UPS you want but a Power Bank. These are becoming more popular and are kind of the in-between a full backup generator and nothing. They are basically powered electronic inverters with larger internal batteries for longer periods of AC power. There is quite the range and especially cost depending on which one selected. Many of them however can cost as much as a backup portable generator.

You obviously didn't read what he actually ordered.
I ordered this:

I'll test how long my PC and monitor will run, if It's not long enough, I'll send it back.

Don't tell me, you live in America?, typical thought. 🤣🤣
If you draw a straight line west of me, you end up in California, we grow wine grapes here and we have a "white" Christmas 1 in 5 years. This area is the Canadian Florida. 🤣
