Staging Tool is an internal Microsoft tool that they unintentionally leaked to Insiders two years ago, then thought better of it and pulled the links.

Microsoft yesterday released then quickly pulled an internal tool for enabling experimental Windows 11 features.
The StagingTool app was offered to Windows Insider fans in a Microsoft Bug Bash quest.... But then those links to StagingTool were torn down ... and the download was removed from Microsoft's website. There are now copies of the StagingTool executable floating around the internet, as one would expect, though we wouldn't trust them.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

True, but one that MS never intended to be used anywhere outside Redmond. It is entirely undocumented (officially, by Microsoft). MS didn't intend to release it, and don't want us to know how to use it. Besides, the leaked version is now two years old.

A search of Microsoft's documentation finds just the one passing reference to it's use: GPU paravirtualization - Windows drivers

And I'm not arguing with your statement. I'm only interested in one point in StagingTool - this is /serialize. I didn't find this in ViveTool.

True. That's exclusively a StagingTool feature. ViveTool has some unique features of its own....

StagingTool offers exporting the configuration to a REG file, which ViVeTool does not allow. On the other hand, ViVeTool can enumerate the component store for existing features, and download a feature dictionary to make it easier to identify them.

If you don't have StagingTool, it's fairly simple to run:

It's not like StagingTool /serialize labels what each exported key does any way.

This did not work for me using vivetool either. What was interesting though was how it enabled small taskbar icons, which I don't want right now but is good to know about considering the number of apps I keep pinned to my taskbar.
Anyway this is super useful for laptop users so I'm hoping they bring it to Stable soon!!

Pardon some cross thread pollination but this seems topical. In Jan 2026 the battery percentage officially rolled out to 2 of my laptop PCs; it's buggy, looks nice when it's there but sometimes disappears (the indicator and the setting itself) and returns after rebots More details here: Enable or Disable Show Battery Percentage on Taskbar in Windows 11
