That is a point. How reliable are they? Eg macbooks are supposed to be reliable (and even more expensive). The SSD is upgradeable but I don't suppose anything else is fixable.

Here's a page that pits the i5 against the i7 (amongst other things). It wasn't too confusing to me, so shouldn't be to you. I was surprised that one paragraph said the i5 is adequate for whatever . . .

Thanks. Yes Core i5 is fine for me. I had a Core i7 one (that died) and it was that bit nicer, but Core i5 is fine. As for gaming, even with Core i7 it wouldn't really be a gaming machine.

I may be out of date but I heard a few bad things about the Lenovo Yoga's - being unreliable.

Apparently the Core i5 8gb surface pro will play fortnite - just. But then it is for college!

My 96-year-old friend just bought a new Lenovo (not a Yoga, I don't think) and it's quite heavy. If we had it to do over, I would have advised her not to buy one. Although the price was right for her. Sometimes we have to take a little badness to get the goodness. Sigh . . . BTW, I'm thinking it's well built; not too much plastic. ;-)

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

That's a good deal :-) I'd go for that if it wasn't for a birthday present as well so feel it needs to be a new one this time. Although have always bought used ones previously (apart from the Fizzbook spin - that was new! A long time ago).

Yep. You can replace the ssd easily - just a little flap on the back to lift and one screw. a 500gb replacement one is £240. Hopefully won't need it. Anyway I shopped around and found a Core i5 with 16gb ram cheaper than the core i5 with 8gb ram £999.99. Added 2 years breakdown, accidental damage and theft cover for £125.00 (all from Amazon). Originally I was going for a discounted microsoft bundle which came out at the same price but included a year of office 365 - but checkout kept failing again and again! So sorry microsoft but Amazon got my business. With the keypad as well it came to £1300 - so slightly more than intended paying but it was probably worth it for the 16gb of ram and breakdown/damage cover.

Edit - the 512gb ssd is £119 and the 1TB ssd is £219.

I wouldn't buy any machine, laptop or PC with less than 16 gb of ram. The i5s today are compatible to the i7s of yester-year and generate less heat. If he's going to be carrying his laptop in a case be aware of all the heat issues folks have encountered with these modern standby laptops and set up its power options accordingly.

I always thought I wanted a Yoga until Lenovo's convertible hinge design proved to be a huge failure for thousands of people, and broken hinges are not covered by Lenovo warranty. When the hinges break most times the bottom case breaks with it. Maybe they've worked it out by now but recent reports are still hitting the Lenovo board.

So it has core i5, 16gb ram and 256gb storage - which can be upgraded later if and when needed. Hopefully won't be needed if he has the desktop computer as well. Office can wait - will decide about that later. Technically he can get free office 365 via school.

Too late now lol. I did look at the HP envy X360 but it had really bad reviews and that xxxxing awful usbc charger (spits as she says it - if you've seen my other post). At least there won't be charger socket issues with a surface pro.

I don't have an S9, but its SSD appears to be a standard 2230 NVME type. £240 for 500GB seems to me to be like Apple pricing. If you do a little Web searching, you will find solid 1TB alternatives for maybe half that.
