Cheers. All good stuff. You raise a good point @Ghot - he’s 16 not 18 and going to Ubiversity. At 18 they all want a MacBook Air or surface pro apparently. All his friends are going to the same college so hopefully he won’t be bullied. They’re nice bunch. Something 16” or 17” would be a bit big to carry daily for an hour or so travel. I originally thought of a gaming laptop but seems he’s outgrown that idea. He already has the gaming pc - just likes the idea of touchscreen and tablet format.

I think the £240 ssd was 1tb actually- sorry my mistake. But still expensive.

I’d also prefer to get a standard laptop if I could find a 2 in 1 that has good reviews and doesn’t cost more!

Still getting my head round 16 year olds - think they are 25.

For a college laptop type device, you want small and light and most importantly all day battery life (And that's why I wouldn't go with a big screen gaming laptop, or getting an i7 or i9 processor....I have an i9 in a work laptop and I wished it had an i5, because my battery life isn't great.....I always have to be relatively close to a charger).

And I can totally see the advantage of having a pen type device and being able to take notes and draw out pictures.

Ahem Ahem... student laptops don't belong in same sentence with 2.000$ (only gaming or professional laptops do). Furthermore Surface Pro 9 is one of the worst deals on the market - you pay quite literally extra +1000$ just for the branding. Even a MacBooks "are far cheaper" at this point (never in a million years - did i imagine myself writing this sentence - but here we are.... a time when Apple products offer a better value). That being said... you could actually buy a 15-inch MacBook Air laptop with M2 chip. They're perfect for students (they're actually the main target - be it those who afford it or spoiled by their parents). They have some of the largest battery - which can keep the laptop on for 15+ Hours. They look great (which can be important for a student) and performs well out of box (Windows laptops can be filled with proprietary bloatware - which can cause issues at times + Windows is design for laptops in general - except for Microsoft's own laptop - which, as mentioned above - surpass even a MacBook at price - the majority are fine tuned by the OEM/HP/DELL/LENOVO/ETC - which are less inclined to care about their customers - after buying their systems).

Anyway, that's just an option - there's dozens of Windows Laptops at half the price with same specs - which are also good enough for students.

I'm in the highly recommend Macbook category as well. The price to performance ratio is outstanding. The Apple silicon chips and battery life is second to none. And they go to sleep and come out of sleep amazingly well. And with built in Time Machine, backups and images are super easy and could certainly save a students bacon. And students get a discount on Mac's too, so don't forget to factor that into pricing.

I like the idea of a Thinkpad...as many already mentioned here (Lenovo). Yoga is good, but there are cheaper options with touch screen that does not turn into a tablet. I have a Thinkpad and it is amazing. Very good keyboard. Also Lenovo has a lot of great deals for those every now and then.

Do not get an MS Surface of any kind...as mentioned, you pay $500-1000 extra just for the branding.

EDIT: Seems Yoga is quite cheap these days...you get a good one for less than $1500

I hope that "they" refers to the teens, rather than the university.

Although, at least in the US, education (particularly private) has become so expensive that adding a couple of k for an elegant notebook wouldn't add much.

(I'm a product of state universities. When I last looked, raw tuition at a State University of New York has more than doubled, adjusted for CPI inflation, since I graduated in 1976.)

Cheers! I've already ruled out HP due to their charging sockets (usbc mostly now) and the fact they can't be replaced. And I'm still a bit iffy about Lenovo build quality. The MSI ones look interesting - I'll check those out. I've already ordered the surface pro but could return it if find something that seems better.

Agree completely - the smaller macbook air worked out cheaper, spec for spec, than the Surface Pro. And is a well built machine. It was actually going to cost more for the 16gb ram version though (about £1800 I think). We did discuss it because he had also thought about one - but both decided it was too much hassle using Mac OS when he has a Windows desktop and better to stick to Windows. And I believe you can install Windows on it but it's not a walk in the park. I may be wrong, maybe Office on a Mac would be ok. But his two first choices were a Surface Pro or Macbook air. He's used a surface pro before. The i5 in the surface pro is supposed to be quite good.

Or he would have been happy with something like another HP Spectre X360 but have had too many issues with these and his old one (10 years old) has had to have the charging socket replaced already and now has the same issue again. At least the Surface Pro has the magnetic charging thing.

He already has a girlfriend lol. And yes he's tried impressing her with the odd thing! At this rate he may not get the grades for college if he doesn't get his head out of the clouds over the girlfriend so am hoping the laptop will be an incentive. Plus some discussions about schedules.

Cheers. I can return it for up to a month so keeping mind open - his birthday isn't for a while - just wanted to get something while there were sales on. I think that is quite expensive though isn't it? But has a good keyboard.

Yeah good point about not having charger in when it's on your knee but people end up doing such things - especially teenagers. And I really hate usb charging. Wouldn't be so bad if you could replace the socket rather than the whole motherboard. But I'm done with them - unless the build quality is better.

Good point about phones too - he's already borked the charging socket on the phone so we have a magsafe charger now, which is better.

Looks good - a bit pricey though even in the sale. I wouldn't mind one. I think he might think it's slightly uncool however with the red knob in the middle!

In case anyone missed it - he already has a windows desktop at home so it's something lightweight for going to and from college.

The MSI Flip looks good but only comes in 16" screen it seems. Did look at the Dell XPS 2 in 1 but it's more expensive again - about £1700. Quite a few complaints about Dell XPS from new as well. But yeah I still think a "proper laptop" 2 in 1 would be better than a tablet with attachable keyboard. But tried a surface laptop myself and wasn't keen. Surface pro is something he'd like as well.

How much storage would you expect to be needed? He would have options to have things in cloud accounts and you can run external storage devices, especially those connected to docks and have just as fast of speed as the internal drive can provide.

True but 250gb isn't very much. The Surface Pro I got only has 250gb and would see how it goes, but the storage is easily upgradeable.

Along with the Macbook Air, the Surface laptops are the best I've ever owned. I've tied others, but nothing else matches the quality and feel of the machines.
