Blocking email from unwanted sites

I have the latest Outlook.com version and just cannot find a way to block several sites for example AVG and Norton -there are others - who keep sending me numerous emails telling me that my subscription is or has run out and I have never used either for over twenty odd years and it has got to the point of having to constantly run through those emails and delete them one by wretched one.
I have tried the suggestions in the Outlook Settings and watched a few YouTube tutorials on this subject but there is no obvious option to do what I want to happen.
Any suggestions really appreciated before I go completely mad!!

If the emails you are getting are coming from company domains. (ie: xxxx@avg.com, xxxx@norton.com) you should be able to set a rule for the domain which automatically deletes all emails coming from that domain. At least this works in Outlook 2021. If you are using the Outlook mail app, I can't say if it allows that option or not.

Hello Glasskutter long time no see!!
Now here is what the address bar shows Outlook and a search shows that I should be able to look up in Help but it is still not clear as what to do to block those senders. Now I have found something under Junk mail that gives me an option to enter the address and I am trying that option as just blocking anything from AVG.com and Norton.com for example and will see tomorrow just if that works - will keep you updated.

Try different methods of adding their emails to the blocked/junk list

Try @domain.com
Try domain.com

You should be able to right click on some of the spam emails to do so.

I don’t use Outlook App so I don’t know.

Possibly do this online at outlook.com

The link Outlook above would suggest the OP is using web-based Outlook (the comment "latest" in the first post is irrelevant), and not one of the standalone email client iterations of this unimaginatively named product.

From my experience, this web based "service" is sadly deficient of many of the facilities other standalone email clients provide, and especially filtering options for spam emails. But, if you want to tinker with the options, login to your account, and in the top right-hand corner click the Settings cog/wheel > then Spam.

There are some settings there, but an example of the stupidity of this option is that, unlike other email clients, Microsoft wants the user to list all the safe sources allowed, and not add blocked/filtered sources (like most (all?) standalone email clients do)

Alternatively, my suggestion would be to install one of the better free email clients (Thunderbird free for multiple email accounts) or eMClient (free for up to 2 email accounts), set up your outlook.com (et al) account(s) in those clients and use the spam filtering options available.

Alternatively 2, use something like Mailwasher (freeware still available AFAIK) - it's not an email client per se but let's you preview what emails are sitting on the server, delete and/or filter before downloading/viewing on your email program, web-based or standalone client

There is no silver bullet. The user will have to do some management. And dodging spam is an ongoing high maintenance function

Go online to your Outlook account
Hold down on (device) or right click on a junk email
Select “Rules”
Select “Create Rule” or “Manage Rules”

In Manage Rules you can create a rule with conditions for this or other domains.

If you select “Create Rule” it will ask how you want to create a rule for the email you selected

Check the options in the rule creator.

If you have trouble creating a rule, I will help (or somebody will help) when I get back from my meeting.

Alternatively you can go to mail in your Outlook account
Click on thew cog top right near your profile pick and click on the cog

Select "Rules"
Select "Add new rule"

In the rule, create a name for it
Add conditions like "Senders address includes" then add the domain in "part of the address" (domain) etc
Play around, create different rules. You can create more than one rule for an email or domain, or you can add more conditions to the same rule. Add whatever condition you're able to that relates to the junk domains.

I believe you can also right click on an individual email in your inbox and select rules and create a rule pertaining to the domain of the sender of that particular email.. I have a couple of companies that sent me so much stuff I first set the rule to send them to junk. Eventually I set to rule to delete instead.

Ok some great suggestions and all I have to do now is wait until tomorrow morning and see what I get in my emails as I am in Australia and am guessing these annoying sites are originating from a different time zone as I never get them in the afternoons always overnight.

I created screens for that, individual and group rules.

Don't think it's that simple. Outlook.com is the online Outlook within your browser. Outlook for Windows is the free App you get from Ms Store. Both have the block feature. What other Outlook Apps are from Microsoft Office installed and which version and again might be different to Office 365??? Lord knows :zany:

I don’t believe the current Outlook App has the same features as the web version, I am not even sure if the “New Outlook” APP has the same features as the web version. Maybe, I haven’t tried it for more than 5 minutes.
The web is full of questions like “How do I get the Outlook “APP” to look the same as Outlook.com

This is Microsofts fault, nobody else is to blame. I think it’s one of the daftest attempts at rebranding I have seen in any company..

Change the name from Office 365 to “Microsoft 365”
Change the Outlook versions from Office Suites to “Classic Outlook”
Change Mail & Calendar App to the “Outlook App”
Change the Outlook App to the “New Outlook”
Etc etc ad nauseam
