Bought Windows 11 Pro Upgrade via MS Store

Hello All

Purchased on July 9th a brand new Ibuypower Prebuilt that came with Windows 11 Home, Just bought the Windows 11 Pro Upgrade via MS store last night

Should i do a clean install to have it properly nice and clean setup? (After chkdsk finishes on my 8TB External as was having trouble with backup software not completing its backup properly---((Acronis True Image--Formerly CyberProtect, previously used Macrium Reflect Home Edition on old system))

Also have a 2nd M.2 i bought, but its a small one Crucial 500GB should i make that the new Boot Drive, and Move Kingston 1TB current boot NVMe to the 2nd M.2 Slot?

I should've bought a bigger one for 2nd Drive, and then made the same size 2nd Drive as Game NVMe

I’ve bought a few Pro upgrade keys for systems in the past. The process does whatever it’s supposed to do. I’ve never been worried about a fresh install.

Oh ok, well guess i'll maybe hold off on the Fresh Install part a bit in that case. Maybe when i get the bigger 2nd M.2 for Game Drive, then do the clean install perhaps i suppose.

I tend to worry, when i bought the upgrade in the past for systems, i remember doing the clean install almost immediately, but of course i had less RL interruptions and stress back then

Yeah, in the past i didn't stress out over it, as then didn't have many RL interruptions, now i got more sadly, and now i tend to stress out to get all my tasks done lol daily lol.

Guess for moment i'll try to chill, meanwhile get drivers together for all the components, get those on flash drive tomorrow, get hopefully backup fully done once drive all ready hopefully by tomorrow

((Acronis support wanted chkdsk ran on the 8TB backup drive, as it kept saying "Last Backup was stopped, and it would restart over and over")) was so fun trying to do the support call eariler with my darn RL family bugging me during it)) Otherwise i may have done clean install even today eariler if it was peaceful enough

Trying to get this System perfect, then i might try to purchase a Micro ATX case for older Intel I7 10700 system and transfer that over if i ever have any peace, and make that new Family PC--at least my tentative plan right now---Currently the older Thermaltake V200 TG RGB does not fit in The Family desk Downstairs, and they refuse to get a new open air type desk lol. (Its a little Cubby area lol, open in the back, but i kinda dislike that desk lol)

Yeah sort it all out, get all your 0 & 1's in a row so you know exactly what you need and will be prepared for your fresh install.

You have a second M.2 disk. Do you also have a second slot to connect it without removing the original disk? Assuming you have and you decide to go the clean installation route, I would dual boot. I would connect the second disk and install Windows 11 Pro there (unless you cannot choose version directly because of Home key in BIOS). This way I would not be in a rush. I would use my old Home installation until I install all drivers and applications on the new disk. If you cannot choose Pro directly, install Home and use the key to upgrade to Pro. If you don't have a second slot, then I would connect the second disk in place of the old and do a clean installation. Any time I need a complete Windows installation, I would swap disks, use my old Home system and when ready to continue I would swap disks again. Not really convenient but much better than waiting for the new installation to complete or even worse rush it and make mistakes.

How about this...

Why go right to doing the hard way first? Just allow it to upgrade to Pro normally. If it works out well for, then you have saved a huge amount of time and effort. If not, you can always do the clean install then.

Do have second m.2 slot, think last time I did this type of upgrade from Home to Pro, always selected dont have a key.

I assume should work same I think or hope so. Though I could use the Crucial 500Gb NVMe as the boot drive, Kingston m.2 as Game NVMe in that case, And sata 1tb storage drive as extra storage

guess will see when ready to do the install for sure

Yeah it's running good so far with the upgraded version, so not emergency to do the clean install. Not rushing like I did on old Machine to clean install immediately

If you already have a digital license for Windows 10/11 Pro for this computer, then you don't need your new key! Just install or upgrade to Pro and it will activate. Use your key elsewhere, don't waste it!

If the computer is running Win 11 home without issues there is no need for a clean install.
Just change the license key to the Pro you bought, it will upgrade and reboot running win 11 Pro.

Yeah it did just that, and so far it seems to be working fine,

I thought for a moment maybe the clean install would fix my other issue with Acronis True Image--finishing a backup image, and then saying Last Backup stopped, will restart at 12:45PM or whatever time it stopped at. did that 3-5 times, then finally says Backup Failed

Though the same drive did that on 2 systems, so guess maybe the WD My Book 8TB is really actually bad, not sure

But that is only issue i'm having for some reason, so things are not too bad at all

Upgrading to Pro wouldn’t have any affect on softwares less maybe giving them more options if they are related to Windows processes.
I’d imagine that upgrading to pro would just change a few policies, flick a few switches, enable certain features, allow you to teleport from your office to your bedroom… maybe order a pizza for you and make prank calls whilst you’re sleeping.

Apart from that, not an impact. But like I said earlier on; “nothing like a fresh install”.

I’m in the same boat as you; Family stuff, business, phone calls and people knocking on my door unannounced etc etc ad nauseam.

So… I have to write down the steps I want to take, make notes as I go in case I get interrupted.. when I get interrupted.
That way, I can’t lose track which with my memory issues, is important.

My installation process on a notepad file is quite long. I made it during an install once, every single step numbered. Edited as I learn new things or add processes or remove processes as I go.

It’s a great help my friend.

Will definitely try that method. Anything im sure will help in this day and age---heck my family doesn't even go out shopping anymore--every single thing is delivered, then i get yelled at to help bring in the bottled water or groceries.

Watch for there Doordashes

Watch for there Amazon packages and bring in

Find a movie on the television for them to watch

it goes and on and on and on lol.

Thankfully sister doesn't actually live here--but when over is more nuts lol

i can't live on my own with my anxiety disablity sadly, Mom countless wanting things daily non stop, heck i did first bios update to get latest AMD A G E S S A (think how spelled) update at 9am other morning---tried not to make any noise so i'd be having complete peace during the update lol.

But yeah i just have to find ways to concentrate, relax, eventually get my 2nd M.2 installed, and enjoy my newer system. Part of me wants to at some point get the older I7 10700 into a newer case if at all possible, and make that Family PC with Windows 11 Pro replacing AMD Liano APU based system from 2011 lol, i figure if i can get Mom into the built in Games like Jewel quest or something--maybe i'll have more peace at least thats my thinking right now lol
