Brother MFC2740 DW can not scan to PC

Then the scanner drivers properly installed.

I am not sure whether it was a complete driver uninstall or the firmware upgrade that sorted it.

I would advise OP to uninstall all drivers using Brother tool and ensure firmware is up to date, and then use full install package.

If that fails, I have no idea what next.

Isn't there the option to do a custom installation and select which components to install? If it is, select only what you want and leave out the bloatware.
