Insider Camera App refresh, Media Player and Movies & TV update for Windows 11 Insiders

  • Staff
Hello Windows Insiders, we are rolling out updates for Camera and Media Player to Windows Insiders on Windows 11 starting with the Dev Channel.

Camera (version 2022.2206.2.0)

The Camera app has been updated to match the beautiful new look and feel of Windows 11. In addition to the existing support for camera, video, document, and whiteboard capture modes, we are excited to introduce QR code and barcode scanning as well.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Camera.

Media Player (version 11.2206.30.0)

Back in March, we introduced CD playback support to Media Player. With the latest update, we are adding support for CD ripping as well. Supported formats in this release include AAC, WMA, FLAC, and ALAC.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Media Player.

We are also beginning to roll out an update to the Movies & TV app in version 10.22061 and higher to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.
  • Native Arm64 support: We’ve improved the Movies & TV experience on Arm64 devices. You’ll see faster and better performance when you use the app.
  • Local video playback migrating to Media Player: We are migrating video file type associations from Movies & TV to Media Player. This migration will only impact file types that are already associated with Movies & TV and only after you open Movies & TV for the first time.
Thanks,
Dave Grochocki, Principal Product Manager Lead – Windows Inbox Apps

Me personally would far prefer lossless FLAC over lossy mp3. Anyway, it may be there just not listed as one of the formats. The article says "includes", not "only". so....

Nope it's not listed as an option. Agree flac is better but at my age, mp3 sounds the same and takes far less space.

Yes, mp3 files are small, but FLAC files can be compressed to half the size of a wave file and still maintain its sonic quality. The only issue with FLAC is media playback support, but it has been around since 2001 so more and more media players support it. But there are those that don't, example iTunes.

Anyway, it's a matter of personal preference and I'm not here to convert so enjoy what you have :)

Media Player needs WASAPI and lossless/hi-res playback support. Until it has that I'm not interested.

Hi there

VLC plays FLAC perfectly (as does the old Winamp and loads more players besides).

Assuming ears are still working even at 90% efficiency : then whether mp3 sounds the same as flac : (I'm assuming that you aren't using lower encoding rates than 192 - although if using mp3 320 is obviously better if converting from an originally uncompressed source sound) then :

It depends on quality of the source recording, type of music -- e.g some classical music has huge transients not easily to convert to mp3 - mathematicians here can delve into Fourier transforms and the like for technical discussions - and quality of the equipment used for listening. Typical computer sound cards are optimised better for gaming and sound effects for films etc - not really for music listening.

Typical domestic computer speakers are just "Shyte" in any shape or form usually boxy sounds with over emphasised bass.

Any sort of music is going to sound hideous if you use cheap poorly fitting bud earphones. Listen to say Saint Saens Symphony nr 3 --the organ bit on proper Studio reference speakers after passing through a proper pre-amp with pro quality DAC's whether from a SACD or a ripped lossless flac encoding --- no contest.

Cheers
jimbo

Problem is my car audio does not read flac, so I need mp3. At home I have a high end Denon setup. problem is my neighbours don't appreciate my Rammstein, so I blare it out in my car

All my music files are flac. Anyway, I use Plex to stream from my NAS to my phone via Plexamp to my car and they play without issue. This is because Plex can transcode the files to play on any media device. It doesn't matter the file type, Plex will play it.

You will need Plex Server to stream. It can be on your PC or a device supporting Plex. My Western Digital NAS supports plex so that's where the server is installed on.

That said, Plex is not free. You can pay a monthly ($4.99) or annual subscription ($39.99) or buy a one-time lifetime license (I did) @ $119.99 - Go pro with Plex Pass.

BTW, Plex app also supports movie and TV streaming ...

With all the features included, there is a bit of a learning curve.
